Alabama is choked by its own ineptitude. There are parts of the state that are comparable to third world countries due to the poverty and lack of access to water, electricity, etc. They constantly rank near the bottom in terms of education and the top for things like teen pregnancy, poverty, and obesity. People here, speaking broadly, are ignorant, lack critical thinking skills, and constantly vote against their own interests.

They just voted for a fucking football coach to be their Senator for fuck sake. I hate this place so much.

Fun back story on that:

This was during the Senate race between Doug Jones (D) and Roy Moore (R). Jones was an accomplished attorney who prosecuted the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing (a hate crime committed by the KKK and resulted in the deaths of four young black girls) and was the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama under Clinton. Moore was a literal pedophile who had been removed from the bench TWICE.

The margin between them was 20k votes and this was after a lot of diehard Republicans just decided to stay home. It was THAT close between an honest, hardworking professional and absolutely vile lunatic with zero respect for the separation of church and state.

It infuriates me beyond words that Alabama didn't re-elect Jones. Every single time I've called his office, I've gotten a response that was more than a generic form letter. Never got even that from Richard Shelby.
