Oldboy and Castaway On the Moon are better, but Parasite is a top tier movie.

I think a lot of people have watched Korean movies. Especially horror movie fans. East Asian countries make the best horror movies.

Parasite was crap. Snow piercer as well.

Okja was better and honestly I thought the heroine from it was in the wrong and selfish. While she does find a darker story to justify herself, she had no reason to put her and her family through the ordeal.

The host. Cheesey but more of a satirical work on ethics of companies and goverments justify their actions.

it wasn't my first Korean film or even my first exposure to Bong Joon-ho. I have already seen half a dozen of his films. Parasite is just really good.
Also, if you like Oldboy, Mr Vengeance is even better.

lolwut? The Host (2007; aka Gwoemul) was a pretty big fucking thing within the last 15 years so, if nothing else, you have that.

Not that The Host was my first k-horror, either.

I've seen lots of Korean movies. I had already seen all the director's movies before seeing Parasite. I enjoyed it. My favorite Bong Joon-ho movie is still Memories of Murder though.

Probably region. I kept trying to get everyone around me to watch it and most would turn it off at the dirty bottles scene feeling attacked

The Wailing is really good. I'd start there. I Saw the Devil is also really good. Already mentioned in this topic and more on the psychological thriller side, but very dark and horrifying: the Vengeance trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Sympathy for Last Vengeance) and Memories of Murder are some of the best Korean movies I've seen.

The Ring Virus(Korean version of the Ring) is a unique take on the Japanese Ringu movie, worth a look. A Tale of Two Sisters is very good movie if you like to piece together what's going on yourself. 3 Extremes, and to a lesser degree 3 Extremes 2 are good short stories(both of them are 3 different East Asian horror short movies from different countries).

Edit: the last movie in the Vengeance trilogy is just simply called Lady Vengeance BTW)

Yeah, I'll second all of these too, except The Ring Virus because I haven't seen that one. I don't think it's Korean, but Dumplings was my favorite segment of the 3 Extremes movies.

Thanks for the correction! I'll remember that next time.

Oh shit, I completely forgot about the last one I watched, which was #Alive. That one isn't a masterpiece or anything, but it's a pretty fun zombie movie. Also, there's a thriller movie called Moss that's pretty badass as well.

Also, these aren't horror movies, but pretty badass Korean movies as well:
JSA: Joint Security Area(it's sometimes just called Joint Security Area or just JSA), Silmido, Hallelujah, Two Cops(the last 2 are super old, so you might not be able to find them subtitled), Shiri(first big budget Korean action movie that proved that Korean movies can compete with Hollywood action titles), Gangster High(you can find the full subtitled movie on YT, it's in many parts, but there is a Playlist for it), My Wife Is a Gangster, The Witch Part 1.: The Subversion(on Netflix right now). Those are just the ones I can remember at the top of my head. I've been watching Korean movies since I was a born, so I don't really remember them as well as foreigners, who see them as something special.

It's not a symbiotic relationship. Some parts of it are, but it's way more of a parasitic relationship than a symbiotic one.

The reviews I've seen have focused on not knowing which group are the parasites since they both take advantage of the other in different ways. It doesn't seem to occur to the reviewer that this means they are also of benefit to the other group. Instead they treat it as karmic justice that they're taken advantage of in return. Maybe that's suppose to be the theme of the movie. Or maybe the reviews I saw did a bad job of covering the material. Either way it seems like there's a counter interpretation that was being neglected.
