Running for president has, for a long time, been a good way to increase your profile in the far right media bubble. Supposedly Trump just ran to attempt to negotiate for a better contract on The Apprentice and doing well was just a fluke.

It was originally a way to pump up publicity for a book iirc. Then he was doing better than expected and went for the ride. I don't think even he thought he would win.
