Your instinct will be to button mash and play like every action RPG you've ever played.

The way to "git gud" is to be patient. Souls games aren't hard, they just require different pacing and learning enemy movesets.

Some things: resistance is useless, and faith/ intelligence don't really matter if you're going for a melee build. If you go normal melee, the stats you want to level are vit/end/str/dex.

Your str/dex spread depends on what weapons you end up liking but I won't go further than that to avoid making it seem overwhelming.

Dont fall into the trap of using the starting, shitty weapon with no range throughout the game.

Learn stamina management.

Understand that certain weapons or certain attacks from some weapons will had a bad hitbox on certain enemies.

You'll do fine then.

You will want to play something else, you will get frustrated, you will quit, you will lose, you will hate this game, and this game will hate you

but if you persevere my friend.. if you power through your losing and your lack of skill

you will be greatly rewarded with a sense of accomplishment and incredible lore

1. NEVER level Resistance.
2. The key is the best starting gift, but very op. Wouldn't recommend on a first playthtough, imo.
3. Dexterity stat also improves spell casting speed (Level 45 being the hard cap)
4. When progressing through the game, you want to go up instead of down, but you're relatively free to explore.
5. Never kill NPC's unless they're aggressive to you first, but even then you don't have to kill them. They can reset their agro, by paying for your sins.
6. Don't get too attached to your Souls early on.

Zweihander isn't a Strength weapon though, but rather a quality weapon where it scales with both Dexterity and Strength.

I'm not mad at this post, but I wanna nit-pick something that bothers me.

The argument that a game isn't hard because you can learn to be good at it. That makes pretty much every game not be able to qualify as hard and you just throw away even having the conversation. It makes much more sense to judge a games difficulty by stuff like its initial accessibility. And even when you factor that in, you're not getting to a point in Dark Souls where you can just coast because you figured it out and have the upgrades to breeze pass most stuff. It keeps punishing you with harder enemies and different movesets.

Plenty of games DON'T do this stuff and it's why Dark Souls earned it's difficulty reputation. Why does it get to so many people that it's considered hard? Nobody worthwhile has implied that hard has to mean you can never be good at it. But that seems to be how people approach this conversation about Dark Souls.

Just affects starting stats. You can play them all the same, just if you had a playstyle in mind, that "class" will get you there faster in terms of weapon or magic requirements.

This is terrible general advice. Longsword is one of the starting weapons and it's great.

Hell, Id recommend that you do have a game to play when you get frustrated. Cause them you stay in the gaming mind space and after an hour goes by you're ready to give it another shot. I'm a From Soft veteran and I think I still had like 3 games going while getting through Sekiro lol

My apologies. The only reason I framed it that way was because I found souls games deeply rewarding once it "clicked", but plenty of people are dissuaded by the initial difficulty. That was my attempt at preventing the bias from setting in. "This game is too hard and therefore unenjoyable" vs "This game is simply testing my ability to learn new mechanics, I'll get it with some practice."

IIRC there's a translation error regarding that ring in the English language version where it says (in the gift screen) that it boosts HP regen, but in reality it raises your max hp a bit.

1. Vitality to 25 should be your first priority
2. Find a weapon with a moveset you like, they can all be upgraded.
3. Bonfires are checkpoints, but they make every enemy respawn. Be careful.
4. Have fun, and don't give up.

We believe in you!

7. Pyromancy doesn't require any Faith or Intelligence stat investment. Strictly upgrades with souls.
8. The game has several tiers of rolling
- Fast roll - Achievable at .25% load weight and under
- Medium roll -
- Fat roll -
9. If you go into Human form you can summom other players, and NPCs for limited help (until they die or the boss of your current area is dead)

It also boosts the strength stat.
If a weapon needs 20strength you can use it with two hands so long as you have 16 strength.

I don't really want to spoil anything or say too much to affect the way you approach the game but I hope you enjoy it because it really is that good.

I would up front say that patience and persistence outweigh pretty much everything. Also don't listen to the "git gud" people, half of them are just trying to make the game sound difficult for their own ego because they were able to beat it.

Berserk is my favorite story and Lordran nails the feel of Midland. But I also love Lovecraft and Bloodborne nails that as well. I feel like the areas and the world design in Lordran are more distinct and memorable than in Yharnam but you can't go wrong with either.
