Those were perhaps the most unique games Ive ever experienced. The cartridges had sensors on them to detect real life sunlight. The stronger the light, the more powerful reading the game would have. This allowed you to recharge your energy faster.

Interesting concept at least.

I never got to play with the solar sensor (got a used one that was busted) but there was a Gameshark hack that made the sunlight cycle. The games were good. I liked them quite a bit actually.

Hell yes, amazing games. LUNAR Knights on DS is a spiritual successor as well. Amazing series and it connected to one of my favorite series, Mega Man Battle Network.

Battle Network is incredible and also how I found out about Boktai in the first place. Wish they never removed the BN6 Boktai side quest in the English localization.

Mmm yes, I enjoyed Lunar Knights as well. It also made it more convenient to play for people like me who leave for work in the dark in the morning and return in the evening when its still dark like I do right now lol

I just remember it being annoying af to play on GBA SP since the cartridge is on the bottom, thus more likely to be covered in shadow. Had to awkwardly hold it in sunlight with tons of glare.

Also its sad that we never got Boktai 3 in the states. 2 was such a wonderful improvement that I wouldve loved to see what they couldve done next.

Great games. A shame 3 never got released outside of Japan.

There is a fan translation though it isn't finished. I believe it is fully playable from beginning to end though.

Oh wow another Boktai player! Yeah I heard about these games a decade ago, and went out to try and find both for the gba back then. I remember playing them all summer in the sun, first to see if that sensor gimmick actually worked, and then because they were actually pretty fun games.

Apparently they were by the mgs dude, so that's cool. The fact that the player can tap on a wall to lure an enemy is a pretty dead giveaway.

Honestly they were pretty fun even without the UV sensor thing, which apparently was made as an effort to get Japanese kids to go out in the sun since apparently playing video games indoors was getting to be an epidemic? Lol.

There was even a 3rd one, but that was Japan only. It was impressive enough that they got the first 2 Stateside in the first place.

Also there was a sequel or spiritual successor on the DS called Lunar Knights which I also played which was also fun enough. By then they'd naturally removed the whole light sensor thing.

All in all a pretty fun series.

I haven't, but I got a patch that lets you manually set the sunlight for the games but never got around to playing them <_<

Maybe some day, but my interest in GBA has waned over the years.

I have Botakai 2 in my closet, I got some massive sunburn playing that game, especially fighting the final boss. I still have Lunar Knights as well, it's a shame that game flopped so hard, it seemed to be setting up a sequel.
