My uncle is moving into the city from a ranch and I talked him into canceling his cable and just going internet(couldn't get it on the ranch) with Netflix/Hulu and all that.

I never was a sports guy, so what are the ways to watch live sports without cable?

Hulu premium comes with sports. Amazon Prime airs Thursday NFL this year at least. NBC Sports and CBS have apps as well, though I log into those with a cable sub. I imagine sling has sports options too.

"Hey, I'm excited because a bunch of guys wearing jerseys that somehow are meant to represent my city/state/country are maybe going to put the basket/foot/soccer/hockey ball/puck in the goal/net! "

"Yeah? Well I'm excited to and in competition with you because I like the other team that does all the same things except they have jerseys for my city/state/country"

"Rar! My teams better!"

"No mine"

"GRRR"

"....Lets go make sure several TV channels and silly reporters talk about all this and they sell a bunch a stuff pertaining to all this in stores"

"...ok"

There...you just watched 99.9999% of everything sports are about.... legally and I even let you have it for free! No need for thanks but they are appreciated.

OTA antenna will get you whatever games are on ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox... not sure which station hosts games, usually. I know Fox does.

I cut the cord right before the Superbowl this year. Depending on where he is at and what sports he watches, he may miss watching a lot. Espn+ shows very little live sports (the one included with Disney+). If he watches a lot of sports, he might end up paying more than cable going with all the streaming services and what sports they offer.

Over the air antenna is only going to get him a handful of games in select sports, for example Monday night football is on ESPN (not ESPN+) and the only way I can watch those games is by streaming on the NFL or Yahoo Sports app.

With the transition to digital broadcast TV, there are all kinds of new channels, some of which are sports related. In southeast Nebraska one of the subchannels of KXVO carries the Stadium network.
