Hollow knight is my favorite game for reference

Maybe I'll grab Iconoclasts if there's a black friday sale

Fun game. Would recommend

Not really that much of a metroidvania though

Not great. The basic mechanics are okay, but the game gets kind of obtuse in the latter half (in that the areas become giant puzzles where it gets easy to lose track of what's next) and all the characters are aggressively unlikable.

If you're a huge fan of the genre and can get it for under $10, it's worth a buy. Otherwise, skip it.

Although honestly, just buy Valdis Story instead, which is a fantastic hidden gem of a metroidvania with tons of replay value.

I randomly played and beat it a few months back, just looking through the free PS+ games I had on my Vita. Solid game. Not as good Hollow Knight gameplay-wise, but I thought the characters were very likable.

Just a solid fairly quick game.

Valdis isn't reviewed as highly, why is that? I'll give it a shot

It's a bit older and it was never trendy so it didn't have the advantage of a popular wave. However, the story is more cohesive, the characters more interesting, the gameplay more fun, and you can replay the game with other characters that drastically alters how you approach the game. It's got upgrades, super bosses, and all the core mechanics you'd expect from the genre.

The only thing that might piss people off is your performance in boss battles nets you different rewards, so if you're struggling you get shit rewards, but if you grind a boss fight to A rank you get better rewards.

@s0nicfan

If you had to pick 3 of those to recommend the most, which would you suggest?

As someone whose played a good amount of indies/metroidvanias.

It was decent. Nothing amazing or special but I largely enjoyed its gameplay.

I will say that the story really didn't make any goddamn sense at points.

That's a tough call. It really depends on whether you prefer combat or exploration.

Every time someone recommends Valdis Story I feel like there's something wrong with me cause I just can't get into that game. As far as Iconoclasts goes I generally agree with the assessments given here but I still enjoyed it through the end.

It took me a while too, but I promise it's worth it. Once you get past the Abandoned Gardens boss and get some levels under your belt, it's a blast.

And to the op, Iconoclasts was just alright for me. It seemed like it was going to be a sprawling Metroidvania, but it has more of a focus on story than gameplay. Also, fuck that tower level. Spent ages going up and down ladders and elevators.
