I finished the Alabasta arc, and his character has grown on me

I've only seen the first few arcs and need to massively work on catching up. but I always liked Luffy. I think a large part of why One Piece is so popular is cause of how likable the main character is

I've always hated those stupid ass shounen leads. You always know exactly what they're going to do or say in any situation.

Weird. Usopps my favorite strawhat and Sanji and Luffy are fine to me. My least favorite tend to be the more boring ones who fade into the background like Robin and (sometimes) Zoro.

I know stories like to paint characters like Luffy "pure hearted" but its hard for me to get behind.

Not really, he has no depth or development to speak of and is relatively the same character from the start as he is now.

Which makes me wonder why weebs praise anime and its commitment to things such as character development when the most popular characters in shonen generally have none of it to speak of.

You can, assuming their more likable traits never overshadow the bad. And Luffys carefree attitude, and selfishness wears thin after a while especially with how protected by plot armor is has.

Whole cake island being the worst offender to this. With so many extraordinary circumstances happening in rapid sequation and perfect timing that you cant help but eyeroll.

Plus one event in particularly got under my skin. Involving the big bad of the arc provoking Luffy, making him lose his cool and above all better judgement atk.

You may not understand the significance of that now, but continue watching into the marineford arc and it will click eventually.

I'm still pretty early in the series, from what I've seen, so there's a good chance the same qualities that led me to liking Luffy's character will be the same ones that will lead me to disliking him.

I really liked when he got so angry that he turned into a Chad, and BTFO that yandere catgirl.

Of the things I've read in the last year, I'd put the protagonists of Helck and Peerless Dad above him.

Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer has my favorite protagonist(s) of anything completed.

But yeah, of the mainstream shounens, he's probably "the bar" alongside Gon from HxH

Paint? He is pure hearted. Pure hearted doesnt mean good, or bad. Luffy generally lives life of you dont mess with me, I dont mess with you. He knows his friends can handle the danger, and when he knows they can't, he can and does limit himself. Sometimes he overestimates his crew sure, but as a human he can fail. Also if his friend's didnt like a little danger, they wouldn't have joined him as pirates.

Have you even read or watched One Piece? Luffy has plenty of depth and has grown a lot since the start. He is much smarter and thinks of people much more than he ever used to. Early Luffy would never have delivered that devastating line to Sanji in Whole Cake Island. Sure he still jumps to conclusions and is not the smartest person around, but people dont tend to change drastically anyways.

Nah Luffy was always good at such things. From helping Nami during the Arlong arc, or telling Vivi how to save Alabasta proper, and to stop dicking around on side quest.

Luffy isn't pure hearted, he's just a virgin. Not that he couldn't pound if he tried but he doesn't like the sex because nobody told him he can eat ass. He only likes eating the meat. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I support Luffy's meat lover's pizza.
