Dude absolutely rips. He's so good and I feel like the best part is that he plays like he doesn't even realize how good he is. Gary Clark Jr and Kingfish are up there but I don't think either have the chops nor play anything nearly as advanced as Mayer does. Been learning some John Mayer songs on guitar and it's a real challenge.

I think his recorded music doesn't do him justice. It's very safe but when you put those songs in a live environment they become a totally different beast. His Live in LA album is insane. His voice is also more palatable in his live performances for some reason. Less controlled and more gritty.

I saw him with Dave Chappelle I think 2 years ago and it was crazy. He's a master of the craft.

Jack White is my personal favorite

Henry Garza of Los Lonely Boys too. He somehow fuses Stevie Ray Vaughn and Carlos Santana in one sound.

Great choices. I love Jack White as an overall musician and he pretty much inspired most of my current favorite musicians to even start playing. Dude is a musical genius. Henry Garza absolutely shreds.

Yes but he's also extremely late to the party

Like Eric Clapton was doing this shit back in the 90s and it was already outdated then

Eric Clapton started doing this shit in the 60s and even then people were like "bro youre just copying black blind street musicians"

Imo

Eh. People compare him a lot to Clapton but I think his playing is more like Hendrix. Clapton himself has said that Mayer is a master guitar player tho.

On a music theory level his playing is more like hendrix but in terms of importance/innovation he's more like Clapton, I think. He just refines an existing style and shapes it into something modern audiences will find good to listen to.

A better comparison might be SRV.

I realise I sound a bit like a music snob or whatever but I think its alright to acknowledge that mayer is a gifted guitar player and serious bluesman while also noting that he hasn't really...done anything new with it
