Everyone is pissed at Nintendo because some fans couldn't put together a Smash Bros. tournament using an emulator or something?

What is Slippi?
Super Smash Bros Melee was released in 2001 and is an absolute masterpiece of a game. Long-term players know that the game has nearly infinite possibilities as a competitive game. Being an old game, it lacks many of the features you expect to find in more recent esport titles.

The goal of Slippi is to bring Melee into the future and invigorate the sport surrounding the game. So far this has come in the form of enabling:

Portable replay files
Complex gameplay stats
Improved streaming video quality
Improved online netcode
Online matchmaking
And more

If the Smash community hasn't learned their lesson yet, they deserve this. Nintendo has been protective of Smash tourney governance since 2014. Stop trying to drink their milkshake.

-Melee will be using Slippi, programmed by one guy, which uses rollback netcode to make it as close to offline gameplay as possible
-uh oh, Slippi uses an emulator
- Nintendo asks tournament TO's to not use it
-TO's are like, "Iunno chief, it's a pandemic, we gotta use the internet."
-Nintendo says, "Oh okay, here, hold this Cease and Desist"
-TO's say, "Welp, looks like we should just cancel the whole thing, even the Ultimate side of it. Thanks Nintendo."

If I ran Nintendo, I'd just incorporate all these fan made projects, put them under some quality control, and officially release it for cha-ching. These programmers did a ton of free (good) work, you can make your money from releasing it, while giving the brains behind the product a cut of the profits.

You can still be super protective of your properties, while regulating FREE work loooool

You would be sued for ip theft. Just because you on the parent doesn't mean you wn original creations from fans. Whole reason that unsolicited scripts and software are deleted if recieved

Ehhhhh, yes and no. Their work on the product and release of it is already illegal. If one approaches the programmers with a contract for an official release, and complete ownership of the product, you basically force their hand. If they refuse to play ball, they get hit with a C&D anyway.

EDIT: I'm talking about other fan made games like Metroid 2, Earthbound 3, Chrono Trigger, Pokemon MMO and Uranium, etc. Not necessarily the tech behind Slippi.

Basically this.

By not allowing this or other large tournaments to be held. You are effectively "killing" melee since there is literally NO alternative since we cant have tournaments in person due to co-vid.

I'll be honest, sounds like Nintendo is completely in the right here. They do have an obligation to protect their IPs.

In order to do this, they have to do it illegally. It requires the participants to illegally download the files. They are literally pirating the game, which is illegal.

Now there probably was a very slim, very slim, that if they had actually contacted Nintendo about it, gotten permission, this might actually have gone through. But Im guessing they didnt even try. Because if they had, they wouldnt have been dumb enough to attempt it anyways.

This should not have been a surprise by anyone. Everyone and their grandmother knows Nintendo does not like this shit.

It sucks for the Melee tournament, but they really should have known better then try and pull this off.
