sure, why not. the internet also invented the phrase 'uncanny valley' and it means 'when things have big eyes'. das unheimliche is that thing you do if someone is choking.

My favorite part of this is people think of a troll monster, even though the origin likely refers to trolling for fish.

The concept was identified by the robotics professor Masahiro Mori as bukimi no tani gensh () in 1970.[5] The term was first translated as uncanny valley in the 1978 book Robots: Fact, Fiction, and Prediction

Meme did not start on the internet, although several specific memes have worked their way around into regular language such as "rule 34"

Troll (in the context of intentionally inciting replies) definitely did get it's current meaning from the internet although it's a lift from fishing vernacular.

such as "rule 34"
There are plenty of memes that are mainstream, memes in general are. I don't think R34 is at all mainstream or known outside of reddit/messageboards.

Memes being mainstream isn't really the same thing as them becoming part of language. I can't really "distracted boyfriend" something but I can verbally say to my friends "final fantasy rule 34" and they will immediately understand what I'm saying.

Yeah, but presumably your friends are also part of the same kinda gamer/internet culture yeah? Like outside of that realm I still don't think that term means anything to people

I heard it for the first time in the opening scene of Fight Club

Given that that movie has been very popular in internet circles, it probably circulated a lot online around the time that movie came out
