Anti-lockdown proteststers charged at police in central London today, some hurling bottles and smoke bombs as they demanded an end to lockdown restrictions. Footage on social media shows officers pinning demonstrators to the ground as the scene in the capital turned ugly.

The Metropolitan Police said 155 people were arrested for a number of different offences including breaching coronavirus restrictions, assaulting an officer and possession of drugs. Anti-vaxxers chanting freedom and stop controlling us made their way towards Oxford Street from Hyde Park, with some pushing their way past a line of police.

Officers wearing helmets faced booing and chants of shame on you as traffic was temporarily blocked on Regents Street while they piled on top of people and handcuffed them. Organisers originally called for protesters to head to Kings Cross in the morning, however the location changed by 11am after bottles were lobbed at officers and three people were arrested by the station for allegedly breaking coronavirus rules.

Our policing plan will continue well into the evening and I would urge anyone who hasnt already dispersed to go home. By doing so, you can avoid ending up facing enforcement action and help protect yourself and others during this health crisis.

A Metropolitan police statement said: Protest is not currently a permitted exemption to the prohibition on gatherings under the current coronavirus regulations. Strict regulations have been introduced by the government nationally to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. This means that anyone gathering for protest risks enforcement action by officers.
