Binding of Isaac and Enter the Gungeon are the highest-tier roguelites, IMO. Tell me why Hades deserves that same tier.

It's underwhelming. I bought into the "dude if you like The Binding of Isaac you'll love Hades" hype. It's a decent game but nowhere as fun as other roguelites.

It actually wants you to beat it, has a story, and a full run takes about an hour.

Huh. I'm not a fan of roguelites. I played binding for a while, got bored. I really liked Hades. But I am also a supergiant fan. The voice acting is really good. The story is good. They threw it together well enough, that going through time and time again, doesn't seem like a grindfest. It kept me intereseted enough to keep going. It took me about 40 hours to get the true ending. I really enjoyed it. But, there is more stuff to do, and my patience is gone. I will def come back to it later though.

See, I thought I was too with Bastion. But then I played Transistor, couldn't get into it, and realized that Bastion's gameplay was actually kind of whatever, and it was the music that made the game so fantastic.

Combat is chaotic and fast paced and the runs have an incredible sense of versatility to them. There's a ton of content to unlock as you progress, and you have a lot of control about how you set yourself up before a run which I think a lot of roguelike games tend to neglect. It's much better than both Gungeon and Issac imo. Wizard of Legend is the closest gameplay comparison to Hades, though Hades is essentially a much more refined and polished take on it.

(And I'm told the story has a lot of depth too, but if I'm being honest, I skip through most of the dialogue since I find it a bit of a pace killer for this kind of game)

Hades is simultaneously an absolutely fantastic game and an absolutely overrated game. Or to be more precise, it's an 8.5/10 that's being treated like a 10/10. The main thing that the game has going for it is that its art style, music, voice acting, and story are fantastic, especially the latter, as the game is quite innovative in how it went about melding multiple runs through the game into the story.

What stops Hades from reaching 10/10 or even 9/10 territory is that there's not enough to differentiate the gameplay in the different runs. This is critical given its status as a roguelite, as the genre itself skews towards the enjoyment of the gameplay itself, rather than using said gameplay as a vehicle for the story, like an adventure game might.

Really, one of the easiest (yet effective) things that they could do to mitigate the problem is just add in more content. Namely, add in more boons to modify how your character and weapons operate and add in more enemies and rooms so that different runs feel more distinguished.

Despite those critiques, I would still highly recommend the game. I don't regret a second of the time that I spent with it.

Huh. transistor took a bit to get into, but the story was awesome. I cried like a little girl at the end, lol. But, different things for different people. I tried Pyre a little bit, it didn't catch me. I'm def getting to it, eventually.

I really have to disagree with that. There are six different weapons and each one has four variations, so about 24 different ways to play and then with varieties of boons and Daedalus builds.

I recently discovered the flurry slash/cursed slash build. With attack speed up, all I had to do was hold the attack and demolish everything in my way since each attack heals you a little. No need to dash or dodge. I mention this since many criticize that the game is just attack-dash-attack.

There are so many different ways to do each run. You just have to be willing to experiment and try different builds. Sometimes they work. Sometimes they don't. Most of the time they do though and when they do, it is so much fun.

I just checked and I am officially 300 hours into the game lol.

But think about how much more different it would be if there were more than a few hand fulls of different rooms or enemies for each floor. Or if they added some completely extra layer of complexity to the game to further differentiate runs. Plus, the TC already mentioned the Binding of Isaac, which can have much, much more differentiated runs than Hades due to the sheer number of items.
