There are millions of starving children right now, children in orphanages, etc. but you don't care about them. You only care about your own genes, which will be completely dilluted in just a few generations anyways. You are truly the selfish one.

You're holding importance to your own genetics which you are deeming worthy of carrying on.

Millions of needy orphans out there, but you seem to think that your own genes are more worthy of passing on. The fallacy is that your genes dillute within just a few generations anyways to where it's unrecognizable.

It's such a stupid sentiment. Just say you don't want kids. Quit trying to make it out to be this altruistic decision. Having a normal existence in the United States is objectively better than not having one.

Emphasis on the normal, as it's usually the better off people making this statement.

Most people who want to adopt only want infants which are rare. By the time you hit 1 yr old your chances of being adopted if you haven't been already drops to practically nothing. So there's always a large amount of people who want to adopt but they only want "super specific rare criteria" so there's always an apparent surplus of adopting parents. Meanwhile the foster care system is in shambles from all the unadopted children.

The foster care system is a mess of legal custody / guardianship, poor health / mental health, and child abuse.

So let's say you're accepted as a foster parent. Here's some of the shit you might expect.

  1. You're being given a kid that has been sexually abused by their parents. They are disturbed and you are uniquely unqualified to deal with this. As are most of their other foster parents. Mounting medical and behavioral problems that are never properly attended to result in them being shuffled around from house to house as the foster parents get rid of them.
  2. You're being given a child that was removed from their home over safety concerns. The parents are fighting a legal battle that can end at any moment with the result of the kid being taken and brought back to one of their parents.
  3. You get a seemingly normal kid. They like you and you like them and everything is great. Another family that neither of you have heard of 5 cities away files adoption paperwork for them and it gets approved. The kid gets taken from you and given to them.
And that's just problems from the children's origin. Child abuse perpetrated by foster parents is also a huge problem. Many of them see it essentially as "renting" kids.

Bringing kids into the world is a bad idea now because the planet is going to be in an awful state in several decades. In 50 years it'll be a climatological and ecological disaster.

I agree to an extent. I wouldn't be comfortable producing a child unless I could provide a very generous upbringing. Too many people pop out kids and then pat themselves on the back for being parents without considering how good the life they created will actually be.

Would I assign a child to the circumstances that I grew up in? No, fuck no.

The logical solution is for us to collectively be more responsible about how much we consume. Ever since the mid-20th century America (and many other parts of the world) has just been on this exponential chart of growth. Not just in population size but also in the way we consume products and disregard the environment. It also goes for big corporations and the role they have in our world.

And yeah in many many ways our quality of life has increased. So you might say "well that means now's the best time to breed like crazy" but that's not looking ahead.

Our planet's ecosystem has already been messed up DRASTICALLY in the past century and if we don't PAUSE and reevaluate why it's happened and how it'll continue to worsen, the planet is going to be unlivable very soon and no that's not an exaggeration.

If we could get a big paradigm shift where everybody was living more responsibly then maybe we'd be good to grow even more. But the way we live right now the planet can't sustain us for long. We're straight-up destroying it

R1masher posted...

There isn't a single person who would save the planet. We need EVERYBODY to be more responsible, it needs a collective paradigm shift, not just a single person who saves the world while everybody else continues to do their normal crap without ever thinking about the impact they're having

With how quickly the human race has gone from horse and buggy to space travel to Mars I'm sure we will find a way to sustain life, whether its on this planet or not.

We've already found out how to be sustainable and stop messing up the planet's ecosystem, we know what we have to do, we just aren't willing to do it because we keep thinking "oh somebody will find an easy fix probably in the near future" (and for a bunch of other reasons like politics)

This is a thought that's bounced around for me. It might really be another phrase for "I'm not ready/fit for this", which has no shame to it.

Being "ready" for parenthood is almost an unrealistic thing. Things just work out to varying degrees by chance. I'm just trying to fill out the gaping holes of where I'm clearly not ready whether it be creating a new child or adoption.

There's being a parent, and there's being someone who had a kid(s), completely overlooking that having a kid isn't something you'll ever be "off the hook" of. No take-backs. If that was the case they should've been abandoned by their own parents.
