Like back in the late 90's you'd have to download game updates from file host sites, and unless you were in the know, you may not even be aware a new update is out, so when you go to play multiplayer the game is suddenly split between patches and the communities were splintered across versions

Back when I played Ragnarok Online on 56k a friend of mine would download updates since he had a cable modem and then burn them onto a disk for me, trying to download them myself would usually estimate 24 hours+ download time
