Do you think more people are dying at a higher rate this year with the coronavirus pandemic occurring?

The answer might surprise some of you

That doesn't surprise me at all. Anyone with a brain would understand that someone with underlying conditions exacerbated or made worse by COVID that dies will be attributed to a COVID death because COVID was the catalyst.

Well ya, a person can only die once.........

But really, the study was pulled because it misused pre-existing condition claims to downplay the severity of covid. This would be the same as saying no one dies of AIDS and then hiding Pneumonia cases.

This is exactly the point so many people fail to realize. It's called opportunistic infections. People saying the numbers are off because they died from other illnesses besides also having COVID are basically saying no one has ever died from AIDS by that same logic.

You should probably travel the country and tell ICU nurses and techs in person that Covid isnt that big of a deal and you have the data to prove it

Alright guys and gals lets be adults and stay on topic here. This is about the rate and overall number of deaths. We all agree that coronavirus is a deadly disease, but isnt it surprising that the overall number of deaths across the board isnt statistically different than from other years? Wouldnt you think that there would be more overall deaths in total this year due to the pandemic?

It is statistically different if you understand how it's being reported.

Flu cases are also lower due to lockdowns and wearing masks. I wouldn't be surprised if car accidents went down too with less people going to work or being on the road. Suicide probably up though, but that is a much smaller percentage than car accidents. Healthcare being swamped has definitely had a negative effect across the board.

And you can sure bet the numbers would have been much worse without all the pandemic measures some cities have been doing or without the worldwide travel bans

We're also not done with the year. Holiday surges with people gathering indoors is going to be bad.

https://ourworldindata.org/excess-mortality-covid
https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/excess-mortality-raw-death-count

> the US suffered some 275,000 more deaths than the five-year average between 1 March and 16 August, compared to 169,000 confirmed COVID-19 deaths during that period.

Experts think our COVID numbers are even worse than reported.

So yeah looks like it's up and we got a bad surge coming

I think it would require more studies (which any scientific person should understand). The next logical step for me would be to analyze the cause of deaths by the numbers and see if those have changed at all. Like are their less car accidents and murders because people aren't going out as much, yet more deaths by natural causes?

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/05/05/us/coronavirus-death-toll-us.html

> Deaths nationwide were 19 percent higher than normal from March 15 to Nov. 14. Altogether, the analysis shows that 345,000 more people than normal have died in the United States during that period, a number that may be an undercount since recent death statistics are still being updated.

Pretty sure 120+ thousand people wouldn't have died this year if it weren't for COVID. Some of them, sure but not a majority.

Less people working.
Less people on the roads.
Less people engaging in potentially dangerous recreational activities.

Not surprising at all, really.

Not sure yet. 2.5-3 million people die in the US anually already, so it would appear covid would increase the overall deaths by about 10%. But it may be lower - it remains to be seen how much covid cannibalizes the other typical causes of death.

I get that accepting that Covid is a serious public health risk is scary for many people, but it's still surprising how desperately people are trying to discredit it instead of confronting that reality, even after eight months of seeing its undeniable effects.

You really need to get over your persecution complex. Posting "I can't say my opinion because it'd just get modded" every time a Covid topic comes up is just a desperate cry for attention. If you have a useful point, learn how to communicate it in a civilized manner, and make it. You won't get modded unless you're being a complete tool about it. If you don't have a useful point, stop pretending that you do. Nobody cares about your whiny vaguebooking.

for what purpose

why would someone who spent many years of their life going to medical school risk it all just to fudge some numbers

You don't understand! Every doctor in every country in the world has agreed to inflate covid numbers to non-representative levels. Because reasons. It's so obvious to anyone that's enlightened enough to watch this one youtube video:
