They get to sit at a computer all day and write magical code. And browse the internet. And with work from home they can have their wife under their desk during zoom meetings.

It's a pretty sweet deal overall

Yes because working 70 hour work weeks prior to a release is not at all stressful.

That's only if you end up on a bad team

I legit feel bad about this a lot of the time. I think at least half the problem though is people in other jobs don't get paid enough.

At the same time though I feel like I could probably stand to be earning more for a marginal increase in responsibilities so

That is definitely not how it works.

Also, if the app crashes in the middle of the night, who's inbox do you think gets blown up?

You ever seen the before and after of Elon when he was a programmer?

I do want to clarify though that I by no means think coders get the short end of the stick though. If it's anyone it's the support and success teams.

Pretty sure that for the pay difference most people would take the occasional stressful crunch in an air conditioned office over working construction out in the sun every day of the year or something like that. I've worked manual labor and office jobs and things in between. The shittiest jobs pay the least and the most stressful point at a nice office job is maybe only as bad as an average shift working a restaurant dinner rush.

I have a bachelor's degree and I work in a lab which is mostly comprised of standing or walking and occasionally dealing directly with animal poop. I have a friend from high school who has a two year degree and works as a phone guy for an internet provider support line and not only does he make slightly more than I do, he spends a lot of his "shifts" on call working from home playing xbox . My job is both harder and more important for the future of the human race but he makes more because it's a private company and tech jobs are overpaid as hell.

I have a really hard time explaining to my mother how stressful my job can be, specifically how mentally tasking it can be solving other people's problems 8-12 hours a day, One time I argued with another Engineer for 4 hours straight and had two meetings about the implementation of a piece of software. I'd consider that pretty normal.

I don't think most people have the gumption for this kind of environment. The problem? It's like this everywhere you go.

Things get even worse if you, or someone else is feeling a superiority complex that day. Nonstop "I'm right, you're wrong" but at least I get to work in my home during a pandemic, right?

I do think CarefreeDude has a point about the team you end up on though. Some companies are going to be more stressful than others period.

I agree it's mentally taxing, and I didn't realize how exhausting that can really be until I got into it. I used to work 14 hour shifts in the kitchen. Yes, it was physically exerting no doubt, but I never found it mentally challenging. Once I learned the recipes it was a pretty easy job.

Programming is constantly presenting new challenges, and there really isn't a "right or wrong" way to do it. So if you ask 3 engineers, you get 3 different answers.

No offense Judg but you're making it sound like you're a difficult person to work with and I wouldn't be surprised if that's making it a worse experience for you. Unless you just happen to genuinely have a team full of incompetent boobs, when you make it sound like heated arguments are a regular thing, then maybe the problem is actually you

Are you really chewy?
I've had issues in the past where I've been difficult to work with, got fired for it (at least that's the excuse, I don't buy it) and now I'm the one who works with the difficult person. Most of the time I'm trying to get people to agree, not disagree. The heated arguments are a thing whether or not I'm involved, and my coworkers are definitely not incompetent.

70 hour work weeks

I mean that just sounds like any high paying salary job. Not nearly as stressful as having money issues and living paycheck to paycheck. But I'm suprrised also at how exhausting my job is for similar reason. Arguments about basic shit that can be done multiple ways, superiority complexes, people incompetent about basic work skills but great at tech skills, people incompetent at tech skills but have great basic work skills, heated arguments about equally good directions to take, having to deal with whatever crap problem comes up, the nightmare of connecting different systems together.

I could probably do the hours in a less "mentally demanding" job and feel much more energetic at the end of the day.

Yeah I only work something like 60 hour weeks once, maybe twice a year.

Go on call 1 week every 8 weeks. Only had one real problem to deal with during off hours and it was a simple button click roll back fix.

Of course it's mentally demanding but that's what makes it not boring or tedious. Tedious tasks are worse.
