Im kidding, scalping has always been alright in my books.

Why should I have to take time off my job and smash F5 for hours until I can snag a PS5 when I can just pay a little extra to get one instead?

Not that I would do that, but the market makes sense

Plus arbitrage is a thing

You wouldn't have to do that if not for scalpers.

flipping isn't scalping. anything with widespread distribution can't be scalped. such things can be incredibly limited and hard to find, but that's not the same thing.

If you buy out your local area's store stocks (which tons of people have done exactly that) to create scarcity, that's scalping. Same applies to bots buying out online vendors.

I dont have a problem with scalpers but I dont understand people who are willing to pay the inflated prices. It makes more sense to just wait a couple of months for the consoles to be available everywhere at the normal price. The world wont end if you dont play ps5 immediately

These prices stay this way because of that very select few who have more money than patience/sense. Basically, everyone else has to stand around twiddling their thumbs because some rich assholes never learned the value of a dollar and have to have it now.

recognizing that market price is higher than retail price is not scalping. it's opportunity.

also this. PS5 is not limited long term. the price will stabilize when the supply does. I see a similar issue with sports cards. there are some that resell for 5x or more the retail number. but those are actually limited. they print x amount and that's it. PS5s will be made for years.

So do you support scalpers doing this with other products? Such as toilet paper or bottled water during an emergency?

The concept of scalping isn't bad at its core. It's the execution. If someone wants to buy three or four PS5s and sell them at a $100 markup, fine.

It's the people who run bots and scripts and mark them up by $500+ that cause problems.

well, as soon as there's a PS5 requiring emergency i'll sled down that slippery slope. but, no. i have no problems with retailers setting purchase limits. that's their option. except when legally obligated, which would, i think, apply to water during an emergency. i know there are legal price controls. not as sure if there are purchase caps. but regardless, be a little better prepared. don't buy your emergency supplies during the damn emergency.
