The smartphone versions of Sonic 1 & 2 were made by Christian Whitehead all the way back in 2013. And they're amazing ports, but for whatever reason, Sega doesn't see the need to port them to consoles/PC. Plus another slap in the face is they used to run flawlessly as paid apps, but then Sega made them free with ads, and after that they run like shit lol. So you basically gotta pirate the older versions now if you want the best experience >_> (v 2.0.4 for Sonic 1, and v3.1.5 for Sonic 2)

"B-B-B-But Neon "Titty Meister" Octopus, how the FUCK are mobile versions of such a classic console game the best!? Are you high!?"

They added a FUCK ton of features and QoL improvements. That's why! They were rebuild from the ground up by Whitehead, just like with Sonic CD.

-Both games are widescreen and 60fps
-Customizable touch controls as well as gamepad support. The touch controls work really well
-Play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in both games.
-Speed caps removed in both games, and the spike glitch is toggleable in 1
-Spindash added in Sonic 1
-Boss Rush added in Sonic 2
-7th Chaos emerald added in 1, which lets Sonic/Tails/Knuckles go Super
-8th Special Stage added in 2, just for fun tho >_>
-Tails can fly in 1 and 2 and pick up Sonic when playing as Sonic & Tails
-Hidden Palace was completed and made an official stage in 2, plus you can also play the old incomplete version by entering a cheat code if you want to see it
-Tons of beta elements were completed and added to debug mode for both games, like cut enemies and the goggles monitor
-Elemental shields added in both games as a cheat

tl;dr: Acquire these games and fuck you Sega for keeping these locked in smartphones for 7 years smh

You can toggle it off.

Hell, they have all sorts of options to make it play just like the original >_> Sonic 1 has toggles for the spike glitch, speed cap, and spindash. Sonic 2 has toggles for Tails flying, and the air speed cap. Plus Hidden Palace Zone is an optional place

Basically the ads bog down the whole experience cuz they play after every act, and for whatever reason, it kinda just feels like the controls aren't as responsive anymore. And the menu kind of fucked up too. Something happened when they made it free with ads and it kinda screwed up the coding somehow.

But I have the older paid versions on my smart phone and they still run like dream >_> So it's definitely better to just pirate the older versions that I listed

I really wish they made a version for Sonic 3&K. Whitehead and Taxman even made a demo for it on their own time and publicly pitched it to Sega, but they weren't interested in it or were too afraid of music rights from Michael Jackson and Brad Buxer >_>

I was gonna tell you this had already been done on PC by other fans. But I looked it up and none of those projects seem to be finished. So yeah, that is bogus how these companies will sit on ideas for as long as humanly possible to stretch out the profit. That's the corporate mentality applied to art for ya.

The level design of the first game isn't meant to have that kind of feature, the places that are designed for speed have springs or tubes help you gain speed in quickly.

Honestly the spinddash is what made the level design of the later games lackluster as it was only about speed then, barely any platforming.

But hey turns out it's toggle-able in Sonic 1 so I withdraw my criticism.

Not well. Sonic 1 Ages iirc just has the spindash and dropdash. Doesn't have Tails and Knuckles and no super forms, elemental shields, etc.

Sonic 2 Ages iirc has the drop dash and Tails and Knuckles (idk if Tails can fly though and I doubt they put in his super form), but no Hidden Palace, no elemental shields, no 8th special stage, no Boss Rush.

Basically they're just the normal roms with the drop dash >_> They're definitely inferior to the smartphone versions

I had the Whitehad Sega CD port on my Xperia Play in 2012. Peak smartphone gaming for me. Anyway, kudos for an interesting topic.

Am I the only one that thinks Sonic mania is kind of overrated?

It's a good game, but I think they focused too hard on it being a remake. Half of the game is rehashed. I also think the music is overrated. I personally enjoy other newer 2D Sonic games like Sonic Advance more.

It's hard. I think I like 3 more than 2. But 2 does have some really good levels and moments tho. 3's levels can drag on for a while sometimes, like Carnival Night or Sandopolis

back on the genesis, I think resetting the console kept your acquired emeralds in memory. So you could just grind them all out on Emerald Hill if you wanted.
