My last point on the discussion from the end of the last topic is that it's silly to blame Fauci for MAGA idiots not wearing masks. They were never going to listen to Fauci. They were always going to only listen to Trump. Fauci made a suggestion based on the information he had at the time, and then that suggestion changed as the information changed. Trying to go "It's his fault the MAGA chuds don't wear masks now!" is dumb.

I'd say the number of people that were willing to wear a mask then and suddenly weren't after is pretty much non-existent. They were never going to because Trump never told them to.

No one is saying Fauci lying about masks to keep supply up for health workers is unreasonable. But it was def bad, and it was def lying.

Liberals need to really stop being so sensitive to "republican talking points". It's literally reactionary anti-sjw style thinking. You're allowing republicans to completely shut down a valid argument or rhetoric, simply by stating it themsleves. It is directly causing groupthink and partisan division. I know many of you want that so I guess that's fine, but it's def not "doing better".

Fauci's position wasn't "lying." You have to understand that in the early in the pandemic, random people were trying to use masks to prevent themselves from contracting covid. Masks help at a very marginal level for this purpose, they are MUCH more effective at preventing spread from carriers than preventing contraction. So, it made sense to recommend not wearing a mask for those not at high risk of contracting the disease - until we discovered the rate of asymptomatic spreaders was very high. There is a lot of nuance to explain here and so officials followed the "keep it simple, stupid" advice everyone seems to love in every other situation.

Obviously this discussion shows people have trouble with these concepts.

The White House told the head of the FDA to authorize Pfizer's vaccine by the end of today or submit his resignation.

Totally normal action that absolutely engenders public trust in a vaccine during a pandemic.

The craziest part? The FDA planned on authorizing it tomorrow morning. So it's injecting distrust in the process because the White House is injecting politics into this for almost nothing.

Kinda.

SCOTUS decided here they weren't going to give this the time of day. They found that Texas lacks standing because they have no business trying to tell another state how to run their elections.

Alito (with Thomas joining) states he doesn't believe SCOTUS can turn down a case in their original jurisdiction but were clearly alone on that front.

I mean, per the Constitution SCOTUS can't issue advisory opinions - they can only entertain cases or controversies. If they're not taking the case they can't go (in any official capacity) "oh btw here's what we think about the merits"

They've bent the rules on that on occasion but yeah.

that's why i was figuring they'd at least hear the argument of why other states have standing before shutting that down - basically an intro to what standing is and what states can do. instead they just skipped right into 'nope, you don't.'

Well, that lawsuit got an answer out of SCOTUS. It was a one paragraph answer, stating what everyone already knew (that states don't have standing to challenge each other's election rules) but that's a lot better than "certiorari denied" with no explanation.

FWIW, Thomas and Alito note that while they would grant the motion (because, again, they think SCOTUS must take its original cases) they do go out of their way to note they would not grant Texas the relief it sought (overturning the election in those states)

So it was really like 7-2 against hearing the case but an implied unanimous "no thanks" to giving Texas/Trump what it wanted. Those two just don't think SCOTUS has the ability to dismiss the case in the manner in which it did.

PredictIt charges a 10% commission on winnings and a 5% commission on withdrawals so the actual amount that could be won there was about half what it looks like. Now that it's at Biden 95%, if you get in now you would lose money by winning the bet.

If my understanding is correct, Suprak would be buying "shares" of "Biden wins MI" at .88 cents that would pay out to $1 in the event that Biden indeed wins MI.

tl;dr: Think he essentially paid .88 cents to get $1 back... before fees which probably eat substantially into that.

So at predict it things are either cashed out at a dollar or you can sell it whenever you want for other people to buy it.

I was betting 88 cents on the dollar in Michigan and 89/90 on a couple other states, and when that gets officially finalized on predict it (I have no idea when theyll close the market) Ill get my return. I can just wait until they close the market or I could sell at whatever it is now. They take a cut of whatever funds you withdraw that I dont remember off the top of my head. But Ive had cash in there for a while now that I just play around with from time to time so I havent looked closely at the specifics of that.

This one was either literally free money or America was ending so I wouldnt need money anyway.

You bet $88 to win $12 (so you receive $100 back). But, they cut out a 10% commission on winnings first, so that's $1.20. Then they charge another 5% commission on withdrawals, so now we're down to $93.89 if I'm understanding it right. So you risk $88 to win $5.89.
