The US needs to figure out how to appease both kinds of the lifestyles it offers. This whole democrat vs republican thing often boils down to urban living vs rural living. Cities are heavily liberal, rural areas are heavily conservative. Perhaps there is a way to set up two separate different sub-countries within our boundaries? The boarders would be weird af though. I don't know what the answer is, but in my eyes that is clearly the root of the problem in this country. The two lifestyles are wildly different, one set of laws for both doesn't make sense to me.

How long has this system worked in our country?Define "worked". The first time we had a competitive election the system designed by our constitution proved disastrous and had to be swiftly amended. Six decades later the country split in half, and post Civil War efforts to make the South democratic were unraveled due to the EC rendering the 1876 election unclear. In this century, the EC has differed from the popular vote twice, and I don't think history will look kindly upon the disparity in either case. Furthermore, it creates perverse incentives for presidents, who can wholly disregard entire states safe in the knowledge that they won't suffer electoral harms for doing so. That's extremely bad, and it stems from the idea furthered by the EC that states are purely "red" or "blue". --- kin to all that throbs ... Copied to Clipboard!

The second time it happened, post-Civil War reconstruction got fucked up. The first time in a hundred years that it happened, Bush won and got us into a never-ending war in the Middle East.
