The US needs to figure out how to appease both kinds of the lifestyles it offers. This whole democrat vs republican thing often boils down to urban living vs rural living. Cities are heavily liberal, rural areas are heavily conservative. Perhaps there is a way to set up two separate different sub-countries within our boundaries? The boarders would be weird af though. I don't know what the answer is, but in my eyes that is clearly the root of the problem in this country. The two lifestyles are wildly different, one set of laws for both doesn't make sense to me.

It would encourage everyone to vote. If you're Republican in California or Democrat in Alabama there's no reason for you to vote currently.

We've spent 230 years being a Guinea pig for a system that no one else has seen fit to adopt. In fact, when we go about "spreading democracy" abroad, we don't even push for countries to elect their leaders this way!

Define "worked". The first time we had a competitive election the system designed by our constitution proved disastrous and had to be swiftly amended. Six decades later the country split in half, and post Civil War efforts to make the South democratic were unraveled due to the EC rendering the 1876 election unclear.

In this century, the EC has differed from the popular vote twice, and I don't think history will look kindly upon the disparity in either case. Furthermore, it creates perverse incentives for presidents, who can wholly disregard entire states safe in the knowledge that they won't suffer electoral harms for doing so. That's extremely bad, and it stems from the idea furthered by the EC that states are purely "red" or "blue".

I mean, I agree that popular vote should be the decider, but of course I think it should be a majority winner, not plurality personally. Biden should be the winner in my mind as the majority of the country want him. Whereas in 2016, I think that should have had a run-off of some kind.

Let's put it this way:
Under our system, the Trump campaign is trying to overturn about 60k votes in three states. Some states are suing other states in this fight.
Under a popular vote they'd be tasked with trying to dismiss 7 million votes across the country.

Republicans won the popular vote as recently as 2004. They're perfectly capable of doing so. The EC allows for them to have a fighting chance without seriously attempting to win over a majority of the public, and that's the approach they've taken under Trump.

I am Republican and think Trump should drop his case. He lost.
But future elections should go back to the standard voting procedure. Covid created a unique scenario.

Reminder that like, 5 US Presidents won the election but lost the popular vote in 250 years. >_>

The second time it happened, post-Civil War reconstruction got fucked up. The first time in a hundred years that it happened, Bush won and got us into a never-ending war in the Middle East. And the last time it happened, it was Donald Trump.

The electoral system has fucked up this country more than a popular vote could ever hope to. <_<
