In 2020, this site lists the average height of every country for male and female..and the average height of the american male today is 5'9 and for a female is 5'4, which is exactly the same as those living in Canada.

They even break it down by state where the tallest men are surprisingly all in CONSERVATIVE states like Alabama, West Virginia, The Dakotas and Wyoming while the tallest females is a split between liberal and conservative..

The tallest men worldwide however are in Europe like in the Netherlands and Sweden while the shortest men are no surprise, in asian countries like The Philippines and Indonesia

I haven't measured my height in many years, but as a young adult I was 5'8". However, my posture was terrible back then so I'm probably an inch higher right now. That puts me right at the average, I suppose? Below average for a (caucasian) probably, though.

America keeps getting shorter. The averaege male height was recently 5 foot 9 and a half and was 5 foot 10 before that.

It was 59 back like fifteen years ago too. Just seems like arbitrary fluctuation rather than a significant trend.

That extreme outliers are making it off.

Height is nearly normally distributed. Obviously the left tail is larger, because it's more feasible for somebody to be 2 feet below the average at 3'9" then for them to be 7'9", but the proportion of the population that has those heights is so small than the skew caused by this would be negligible. It's close enough to a normal distribution that a lot of the data I'm finding seems to even be using "mean" and "median" interchangeably. There might be some cohort effects I'm missing, but you're not getting a drastic difference because of the outliers

My theory is that the people below the height average are mostly older. At 5'10, I've never felt especially tall, and in many groups of people my age, I've legitimately felt short. But I can't remember ever being surrounded by tall dudes over the age of 40. Individually, yes, but not on a wide scope.
