Stimulus isnt really needed because the cause of the economic downturn is covid (i.e. people arent spending in ways that are currently dangerous)

There are ongoing programs that use this foreign aid. Its a standard part of the budget, and even delaying it a few months like you guys propose would be very disruptive. Its the same as if Trump had demanded, say, taking EPA funding out of the budget.

Its not a serious proposal, theres no way in which the supposed trade is actually going to happen, and we shouldnt go any further in humoring the premise than Pelosi is by holding a vote on the aid increase as a stand-alone proposal.

Removing the foreign aid is not an option. People suggesting it as a trade should be reevaluating.

If it was really was as simple as "cut the foreign aid to get relief checks now, then pass it separately in a few weeks", I'd be all for it. The problem is a) the proposed $2000 checks still won't pass and b) even if the new bill did pass, there's no reason to expect the GOP would let the foreign aid part pass on its own.

We're suggesting they pass/correct foreign aid the day after trump signs a stimulus bill.

This is a good opportunity to force the Republican Senate to take a stance on a relief package.

It is also am example of why it is dumb to tie the covid relief funding to the passing of the standard federal budget because it allows unrelated things to get conflated.

Actually the net result of all of this is going to be negative, because all that will actually happen is a delay in the relief while we pretend that anything is going to happen with Trumps attempt to blow up the deal

Much of it was exactly what the Trump administration itself asked for in its budget request, yes. And as LotM said Graham was the Senate committee chair who oversaw and approved it.

Not a single American who is an 'average voter' gives a fuck about foreign aid over money for Americans.

It's that simple. It is a huge, huge political win if they call the bluff and republicans back down. To the average person it is as simple as 'hey, foreign aid shouldn't come before us!"
