soI watched this movie earlier today and I think I might have missed something.

why did buddy want to destroy the world and did we ever get told exactly what his contraption was and what it would do? Also at the end, the one soldier guy, was he serious about trying to kill the protagonist and Pattinson?

It explicitly states that he wanted to end the world because he himself was dying--like with his wife: "If I can't have you no one can!" The soldier guy was probably half serious. The real question is what happens in the other half of the movie we don't see (Pattinson's past and the protagonist's future)?

Sator wanted to destroy the world because he was dying and in pure selfishness of if he can't have it, no one can. The algorithm is a machine that would invert time and would catastrophically end everything.

So if Sator was just doing it to end the world out of pure selfishness why was he talking about the future attacking the past at one point? Also what was the whole deal with time inversion? That part i didn't really understand either. Like I get that you can go through the machine and then you start experiencing time flow backwards, but like why and how did these machines exist.

The movie was dealing with issues about climate change. We fucked over the people in the future and they were seeking to fuck us over on the hypothesis that destroying the past wouldn't destroy the future

The future was basically destroyed and they felt the people in the past were responsible for climate change and the lack of resources. With no other choice for survival, they focus their anger in destroying the past as well as their own existence hence the grandfather paradox. The unnamed scientist who created the algorithm had an oppenheimer moment and decided to scatter it in pieces in the past.

one thing I don't get is if you're in the past so things happen in reverse for you, and you need an oxygen mask since oxygen goes right through your lungs, how come Robert Pattinson's character was fine without any of that

admittedly, there were times that I wasn't paying attention, so maybe I missed something.

temporal pincer movement as explained in the movie. one team was going backwards while the other was going forward in time. each side using knowledge the other side gained from what they experienced.

I think it had to do with him going far enough back that he could start living in forward time again so everything just worked as normal.

Do we know what would have happened if the algorithm was activated in the future when it was originally built? Or was it designed specifically to be used on the past?

It didn't matter when it'd be used because either way it would invert time and destroy everything when put together. There's not really much more to it, it's the macguffin of the movie.

Almost like I'm inverting them? Lol

Its something I tend to do when trying to understand something I don't quite have a grasp on, like if I can rephrase things in my own words and I am correct then I know I have an understanding of them.

This is not entirely true. The people in the future thought their only chance for survival was to invert the world and return it to a state before climate change killed everything. It was their last hail mary chance for survival, while the scientist who created the algorithm knew it would wipe out all of existence, future and past. The "villains" in the future weren't just angry and decided to blow everything up because of spite.

I thought that was just the tactic they were using for the final battle.

I meant, since he's from years in the future, shouldn't he being in the past affect him the same way it affects others?

idk if I missed something that better explained it or anything

you only need to have an oxygen mask if you are inverted, and traveling back in time. Once you are sent through the machine again and traveling forward in time like normal, you dont need oxygen. Thats why the protagonist didnt have an oxygen mask, Neil didnt have an oxygen mask, Sator didnt have an oxygen mask, and Kat didnt have an oxygen mask, even though they all went back in time for days.

Im still trying to figure out when Neil was supposed to die past the end. Like after they parted ways did he just go for the turnstile and rewound back to his death?
