Christmas fresh food supplies could be seriously disrupted as freight traffic from the UK to France is halted, the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has warned.

A growing list of European countries are banning travel from the UK as a mutant variant of Covid-19 spreads across parts of the south-east of England.

Dovers ferry terminal has closed to all accompanied traffic leaving the UK after France moved to shut its border.

The Eurotunnel meanwhile will remain completely closed from the UK to France for 48 hours as of 10pm on Sunday.

And with 10,000 trucks normally crossing the Channel daily in the run up to Christmas - according to the British Retail Consortium - there are serious concerns within the food and drink industry.

The FDF's CEO, Ian Wright, said: Tonights suspension of accompanied freight traffic from the UK to France has the potential to cause serious disruption to UK Christmas fresh food supplies and exports of UK food and drink.

"Continental truckers will not want to travel here if they have a real fear of getting marooned

"The government must very urgently persuade the French government to exempt accompanied freight from its ban.

its great being british right now

super mutation, christmas cancelled, people stranded in this country with travel bans, no deal brexit looking likely and now disruption to fresh food over christmas

fuck this year. i honestly thought christmas would be a nice escape for a few days but nope

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

i had to cancel christmas plans as well, im in tier 4 too. i was planning on seeing family in lincolnshire and in essex over the christmas bubble but thats burst now

i'm okay but this whole thing has depressed me somewhat since i still cant see family. but im reading stories in the news about elderly people in care homes not being able to see anyone, and i have friends who cant fly home because of travel bans. so i know its a lot worse for others

how you holding up?

Yeah, cancelled mine as well as while not in tier 4 myself travelling all across the country and then going back to working with vulnerable people just don't feel right. Sucks, but planning a family zoom call or something so hopefully it works and not overloaded.

i have two zoom calls planned but it's going to be hard to see other family members celebrating together. i really wish we could have just had christmas but alas the virus finds a way. i am quite worried about the new strain. i feel like this is going to end up worse than the first wave

congrats on the purchase! me and my partner are trying to do the same but it's tricky at the moment since we're renegotiating based on urgent damp work that needs to be done. luckily we had our mortgage accepted too.

i don't see it improving in 2021 either but i do agree with your mum. i feel like (hopefully) i'm not in a bad position to get covid. but my mum could be vulnerable and i would kill myself if i ended up giving to her

If it makes you feel any better, epidemiologists suspect the US is into its 4th mutation of covid by now.

i went to my local supermarket earlier today and out of all the christmas stuff, they didn't have brussel sprouts. but lots of carrots, potatoes, parsnips, etc

but it was looking a bit bare in other aisles tbh. not as bad as the first lockdown in march

I'll only believe it maybe a year after it comes into effect to see if they follow through.

Hang in there Parappa. Things are not great in Sweden but of course nowhere near your levels (yet).
Do you have things set up so you can set least FaceTime with your family?
