If you're not worried about the snobbish nomenclature, go with the TV that is in your price bracket, and is bigger. There are still some HDTVs on the market, but most of them have gone to 4k. Look at reviews about reputable brands. I like LG and Samsung TVs.

TCLs are really good for the price range. If you don't mind paying a little more I've never had an issue with Samsung TVs.

Vizio TVs have less apps and Insignias didn't last long for me.

heres some options i like

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-50-class-led-4k-uhd-smart-fire-tv-edition-tv/6401029.p?skuId=6401029

@VipaGTS told me Insignia is owned by LG and a lot of the parts, although recycled from previous years, is all high quality and similar, if not the same as LG

theres also this tv

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hisense-50-class-led-4k-uhd-smart-android-tv/6431212.p?skuId=6431212

this one is mainly good for the cheap factor. i personally never notice minor details, but a big tv buff may notice the screen isn't as clear or whatever. also some people might say hisense is a shitty brand, but ive heard decent reviews about this one.

I bought my mother a budget TCL 4K TV (don't tell her) and it sometimes looks better than my Samsung Q80T. Look for a future proof T.V and don't cheap out if you can afford it. If you can't afford it, there's nothing wrong with T.V's in the 400-500 range. Which at that point, you're looking at a TCL as Samsung and LG budget TV's are that good.

Even though people are starting to push 8K, no one is taking them seriously. And the difference between 4K and 1080, is barely noticeable.

All I know is there's a Samsung 55" TV for $500, and a Samsung 50" TV for $550. Could also go with Hisense or Insignia for $200 less. All I know is stay the fuck away from the cheap Walmart brands, like RCA.

That's because nothing broadcasts in 4k. They were going to do the Olympics this year, but they got canceled for obvious reasons. Upscaling technologies aren't good enough to make 1080p look like 4k.

A lot of things depend on your budget and what you intend to use the TV for. The lower your budget the smaller the difference between different brands. Samsung's budget model TVs aren't going to be significantly better than TCL's, but their high-end models will be.

Will you be doing a lot of gaming on this TV? Will you ever use it as a computer monitor? If so there are some specifications you should look into like input lag. This usually isn't advertised, so you would need to find a reviewer who tested it. I suggest rtings.com

heres a question for you guys. part of me is hyjacking the thread, but i also think this might be important for TC

whats the best smart OS for your TV?

Amazon Fire?
Android TV?
Apple TV?
Roku?

Seems like, from what I've read, Amazon Fire is the worst, Roku is the most popular and Android is the most overlooked but underrated. Let me know is that is totally false. >_> Amazon Fire might only seem like the worst because no one ever bought Amazon's lineup of phones.

If it comes to smart TV adaptivity, go with what's most popular, because you get the best assortment of programs and features. Don't be a hipster for the sake of being it, if they're in the same price bracket.

  • Roku has a simple interface and doesn't litter itself with ads like some of the others do. However, it doesn't have some of the more advanced features like game streaming (Steam Link, Nvidia GameStream).
  • Apple TV integrates very well with other Apple devices. I paired mine with my MacBook, and it worked almost as well as just using HDMI, at least for non-gaming purposes. It has a clean interface, and it runs very fast. It has some gaming capabilities like Steam Link and Apple Arcade, though it's not as good for that purpose as Android.
  • Android TV is the most feature-loaded of all of the smart TV platforms. They can run nearly any app that works on Android giving it the biggest app store. It also has built-in Chromecast support. You can even side load apps that aren't available. It also has Google Assistant support.
  • Fire TV is mostly for people who have really bought into Amazon's ecosystem. It really pushes Amazon's services on its interface. One good thing about it is it's basically Android under the hood so you can side load Android apps. I'm not a big fan of it.
