If so, why? I'm pretty strongly convinced that life after death isn't even remotely possible. I also worry that if it is, it isn't good.

Just as realistic a chance as there not being any afterlife. Can't know either way, so I consider both valid possibilities.

Nay

But at least we can rest assured that if there is, it probably won't involve this board

We really don't know if we have a soul or whatever that makes up the "you" is actually there or it's just a process of brain waves and synaptic reactions. If there really is a soul, it might be something that is much smaller than a neutron. When you die, that part of you could drift off into the void of space or maybe..the sun?

No such thing as your life continuing on. Once the body is dead, the brain and everything that makes that person who they are dies as well. The thought of "heaven" or "purgatory on Earth" are only there to make people accept the inevitable, because when you think about how your being will cease to be, it could drive people insane if they don't have some sort of expected closure.

I mean your consciousness ends every night and works out how to begin itself again each morning, no reason in an infinite universe / new simulation / higher plane of existence etc etc that the you part of that couldn't chance upon some material state to let it occur again.

Here's my take:

I think our brains give us a twisted view of reality. We experience time as movie at a static speed through a straight line.

Everything exists within certain boundaries, including the universe itself. Human life is no different.

In three dimensional space, everything exists inside certain coordinates. Inside the coordinates it exists, outside the coordinates it does not exist. In four dimensional space, we include time as well.

The concept of "eternity" is really a human invention. Eternity doesn't necessarily mean extending infinitely in the past or infinitely in the future.

If you are alive on May 21st then die on May 22nd, then there is a point on May 22nd that includes one side of the boundary of your life. You are dead on the 22nd, you are alive on the 21st.

The experience of time as constantly moving is just a product of our senses. We experience the illusion of moving from birth to death slowly but surely, with death as an inevitable outcome. In reality, all it is is simply existence within a set of coordinates in time and space.

If you die on the 22nd, you will always be alive on the 21st. Whether you are alive or dead is simply a point of view. The observer placed on the 22nd has the point of view of you being dead. The observer placed on the 21st has the point of view of you being alive.

Life after death implies a reversal of the coordinates. No matter between what time coordinates a person is alive, the person will always be alive from a point of view placed inside those coordinates.

So what you're saying is there is a higher dimension than the one we're currently in?

But your brain doesn't die when you go to sleep. It's not really even in stasis, it's still quite active even when you're unconscious.

Yes.

Not that it really matters. If there is life after death then cool (or maybe not cool for some). If there isn't life after death we'll never know.

You guys really don't think the maggots that eat our dead corpses don't get eaten by something else, and then eaten again by another predator, and then by another human and that we don't wind up in someone else?

we're always in someone else ;o

honest answer: i think there's the potential for an illusion of an afterlife. our sense of time in dreams is fuzzy, at best. so, if you die in a way that allows for a dream-like mental state, it's possible for that last moment to seem like a very long time. (this is my explanation for those people who honestly believe they've "come back from the afterlife". it's true, from a certain perspective. it also explains why such experiences always seem familiar to the one experiencing them. it's pretty much just their brains fulfilling their expectations)

or, maybe we're all just playing Roy.
