Just through the tutorial and the first battle/cutscene so far. Did most of the tutorial and played FFTA at some point way back so i'm not completely unfamiliar with the system.

Someone died in the next mission on the plains. They turned into a crystal. Guess it's like FE with permadeath. Lesson learned.

Oh good. Was about to say I hope it's the war of the lions version, which the Android version is. Great game.

Yes, units can permanently die by losing all their HP and turning into a crystal. Note that eating crystals lets you learn abilities from the dead units, so it's good to keep your own fellers alive and chow down on the opposing humans. (Monster abilities can't be learned this way.)

Also, the generic units you start with aren't important, so don't feel bad if they died. Personally, I throw away all the random ones and hire a few of my own design, like a fighter with high brave and low faith.
