In a word, underrated. There are several cities I really like in the Midwest: chief among them are Indianapolis, Wichita and especially Kansas City. The cost of living tends to be low throughout the region, there are some excellent choices for higher education interspersed throughout, and people tend to be more decent and hospitable than in the Northeast or South.

If I could lay my roots anywhere in the country and money wasn't a factor, I'd pick the PNW or Texas. But I definitely couldn't complain about a life in the cities I mentioned earlier.

People underrate the Midwest most of the time, usually because they've never lived anywhere else for their entire lives.

At worst, there can be a lack of close things to do and that's about it. The drug issues are part of larger problems that politicians don't really care to acknowledge.

I was born and raised in Wisconsin before moving out to California. When I lived there I didnt think much of it because it was what I was accustomed to. Despite traveling frequently as a child and seeing new states and countries, at the end of the day Wisconsin was home so I loved it anyway.

But once I moved to LA that all changed. I realized how much more exciting life can be when you live in a major metropolitan area. It beats living in a town where the go-to attractions are your local Walmart, the bank, and a Subway restaurant.

I always think it's funny when people who spend 14 hours a day shitposting on CE will say that there's nothing to do in the Midwest. As if you'd be going out and doing things if there were.

I'm a boring person and I embrace that. I'm comfortable here in the Midwest and I'll be able to retire much earlier than I would in a higher COL place.

Kansas and Nebraska are the worst fucking places on Earth. Emptiness as far as the eye can see. As if the sky will swallow you up at any moment's notice. Terrifying, disgusting, void. Put some goddamn trees on the sides of the highway. Driving through those flyover states is a liability. The wind gets so strong it can just knock you off the road if it feels like it. And there you are, careening down an endless strip of asphalt inevitably being hit by 90mph vehicles. The last thing you see as you crawl out on the road, bleeding to death, is one of those impossibly tall and equally horrifying windmills laughing down at you.

I live in Chicago currently, and really like it. Honestly, there's more stuff to do here than in San Diego, where I lived previously. Chicago feels like a "real" city, as opposed to the more spread out San Diego. I also like Kansas City, Minneapolis, and Madison. If it weren't for Covid, my wife and I would have seen a lot more of the area, too, this year.

That said, we will likely move back to Southern California at some point.

I really think you're on to something here. People can use their money however they want and I would never claim otherwise, but I don't understand the logic of these hardline introverts who insist on living somewhere "fashionable" like Seattle or Austin. Nothing against those cities at all, but they're expensive as shit and I can't see how they'd be worth the money unless you fully threw yourself into them.

As remote working opportunities continue to improve, I think more and more people will cozy up to the idea of spending some years in flyover America to achieve their financial goals more quickly.

I've lived in the South and Midwest, and my experience has been the opposite. Midwesterners tend to be very upfront about issues such as the opioid crisis and local prostitution, and use a lot of self-deprecating humor to describe their region. Southerners like to thump their chest about how the South is #1/not backwards at all and take concerns/criticisms super personal.

In the movie "Logan Lucky," there's a warden who denies any incident that happened at his prison. A fire breaks out? "We don't have fires at Monroe." That's pretty much how a lot of Southerners discuss their community issues... unfortunately, this includes many politicians and public figures.
