The way you are saying it is correct. A good friend of mine is Lakhota Blackfoot and he's real spiritual and him and his family refer to them how you pronounced it. Also watch a lot of River Monsters and Jeremy Wade who speaks a bunch of different African languages and frequently visits tribes with shamans says it that way also. Your friend is wrong, there is no Y in the word and entering a random Y sounds makes no sense. If it was spelled sheaman it would likely be pronounced his way.
