"Birdie is gay and out," Philipps said of her 12-year-old child, adding that the preteen shared it with her "at 10 years old"

Busy Philipps is opening up about her eldest child Birdie Leigh's journey regarding their sexuality and identity.

The 41-year-old actress revealed Birdie, now 12, came out as gay when she was 10, on Thursday's episode of her Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Best podcast. Philipps also shared that Birdie prefers they/them pronouns.

"For those of you who are my friends listening at home, this is the first you're hearing that Birdie is gay and out," Philipps told her cohosts Shantira Jackson and Caissie St. Onge. "Birdie told us at 10 years old and we immediately... I mean obviously, I knew that Birdie knew."

Philipps shares Birdie and 7-year-old daughter Cricket Pearl with her husband, screenwriter Marc Silverstein.

Elsewhere in the podcast, Philipps spoke about Birdie's pronouns.

"I said, 'You know, Bird, I've been doing a bad job with the pronouns,' " Philipps recalled. "Because Birdie said that they would like their pronouns to be they/them, and I haven't been doing it, and I said because I have this public persona and I want Birdie to be in control of their own narrative and not have to answer to anybody outside of our friends and family if they don't want to."

Basically yeah. Acting like people fully understand their sexuality at such a young age is super weird to me. I was in my mid 20s when I felt I had that figured out.

I also think it is weird to broadcast that your child is gay, because you wouldn't do that if they were straight. Also, why broadcast a child's sexual orientation?

if a parent mentions their kid immediately it's wrong because it's not respecting their kids privacy

But if they mention their kid years and years later at a relevant time then its wrong because they are probably picking a spot for attention

Indeed. It's bad. Parents using their kids to push an agenda. It's like that Greta Thunberg kid, with her artist parents. They had an opinion about stuff, their daughter saw a documentary on climate change, so why not use this in order to push their agenda? After all, a message is more poignant if a kid conveys it...
Same goes for other artist, actor, whatever parents, like this one, especially in America. If you don't want to fade into irrelevance, just have your kid come out as gay/trans/whatever and score points. I mean, it's not like this kid knows anything about sexuality and queer stuff at her age, but their parents can decide that for them, so it's all good!
Also, notice how it's always those parents that give their kids weird names because they're "special", that do stuff like this. It's almost like, if you're called Sunlight Boombox or whatever, you kinda have to be queer.

12 isn't too young to know what you're into. I had lots of crushes on girls at 12.

exactly!! i have a really masculine name and nobody cares BUT me. i hte my name but kids dont care. the only judgemental looks ive gotten are from substitute teachers who are like 70. my partner is non binary and i respect them for that, and the rest of my friends do as well!! we dont actually care, its pretty cool

When I was a kid people did care and were assholes.

IF a boy turne up to school with a wig and wanted to be called a girls name, he would be bullied immensely for being "gay".

Gender =/= Biological Sex.

Arguably you could try and say that gender shouldn't matter in general but considering all forms of identification and social identity starts with gender, it is wishful thinking to tell someone not to stress about labels.
