Trying to run KotOR on a modern PC is an outright annoyance while running TSL is pretty damn hassle free.

Bugfixes, the restoration project with workshop availability on Steam, controller support, and actual 16:9 screen supports

Fucking nice shit

Never played either of these despite having both of them in my Steam library for ages. Are they really that good?

In my opinion they're both among the absolute greatest RPGs I've played

The second one with the restored content patch is one of my favorite pieces of Star Wars media

They were great, combat just aged horribly.

Regardless, I'd recommend them.

KOTOR I and II are some of my favorite RPG's ever, and I played them both so many times doing different alignments/builds. The former is probably my favorite Bioware(RIP) game. I only ever played KOTOR II on Xbox though, and boy was it a mess because I felt like there was a new glitch every playthrough.

I don't understand how you follow up on such a great game by making the sequel developped a completely different team.

A better question is how that completely different team manages to not only follow, but also surpass the first game

I like that KOTOR2 had the balls to make a complex but convoluted story about the nature of the Force; as a game it doesn't execute in the way that KOTOR1 does.

There was nothing special about either of them for me.
The stories both amounted to nothing and there was only one character in both games that I liked but even then it wasn't great.

I hate how in combat you can be less than a foot from an enemy and still miss. I know why this is (dice rolls), it makes sense gameplay-wise but it takes me out of the game all the time.
I just don't see what so many others LOVE about it. Seems average at best to me.

Its ironic that they run and look way better on an iPhone than they do on the latest PCs. As you can tell by my username, they're some of my favorite games of all time and hold up remarkably well.

Going back to kotor 1 like a couple years ago I was actually shocked at how horribly written the story was. That game has legitimately some of the worst dialogue in any bioware game and thats saying something. The appeal to it is really in making your own Jedi and fighting people, as opposed to kotor2 where the world is a lot more interesting and characters seem a lot more like real people even if the game is falling to pieces around itself

Kotor is one of my biggest gaming regrets, I bought the game back in the day for Xbox after it already had been out for a few years. I gave it a try and got annoyed at the combat system early on almost to the point where I didn't even get to the third battle, and never played again. I know I clearly didn't give it a chance and it annoys me to know that it ended up being a classic lol

I was so close to being like you. I rented it and thought "what the fuck is this?" when I started battling. I expected a game like Jedi Outcast.

Luckily I kept on going and got to Taris. Then it clicked. I can just..go around and talk to people? I can be an evil asshole? I can recruit people who have their own stories? This is amazing! Then I spent two solid weekends marathoning it and fell in love with WRPG's.

Kotor was my first non-Pokemon RPG and I was absolutely addicted as well. It still holds the record for my longest gaming session ever, at about 19.5 hours.

Looking back, it's surprising an RPG that unapologetically uninviting (as mentioned, the combat system is literally dice rolls) could have hooked a newb like that, but I immediately fell in love with the world and story. This was around the time Star Wars fan were rejecting the prequels, so many of them embraced Kotor as an example of a SW story "done right".

I loves the first game. Vintage bioware. It's basically a precursor to Mass Effect.

Theyre more of a precursor to Dragon Age then Mass Effect.
