Good evening -- I've got a bit of a specific request, hopefully it's not too niche. Recently I've been craving a particular type of story that I can kind of identify, but I'm not exactly sure how to specify it.

Essentially, what I'm looking for is a story of a reality that is "fake", or an alternate dimension that is "almost real"... Where a character might be motivated by a sense of "dislocation" from reality; some underlying suspicion that the world we perceive isn't what it seems, and that a "truer" reality exists behind/beyond it. And this motivates a character (or characters) to attempt to cross the boundary and "transcend" (or, "reach an enlightened state", or whatever that might mean in the story.)

The most obvious example for this is, of course, in sci-fi, with virtual-reality stories like The Matrix (including The Animatrix short films) or the book Snow Crash. But I've also noticed this in horror, as in Stephen King's writing (for example in the Dark Tower books), as well as in drama films such as The Truman Show. And it is sometimes used to break the fourth wall in interesting ways.

Basically I'm just really interested in how these things are portrayed in different media -- the detachment from reality, exploring the limits of human perceptions, and a character that searches for a "higher truth". Hopefully this is enough info for more? Appreciate any input!

Yeah that totally is a good example also! Its all about how our perception of the world is tied to memory.

Totally just realized that this is totally explained by that classic allegory of the Cave...

Where there's a dude inside a cave watching a fire cast shadows of things, and since the shadows are all he sees, he believes that is reality. But then he discovers that he can see the things themselves. It's like moving up a level in perceiving the "truth" of things

Yeah, that's a great point too. I never did read A Scanner Darkly (been meaning to), but IIRC the movie does have elements of this... With those weird shape-shifting suits.

Appreciate the other recommendations all, thanks <3 will check out as many of these as I can
