personal tangent incoming because I need to vent

I have a good friend who is basically a reverse Corrik. I'm pretty sure his fiancee has indoctrinated him into the cult of believers that democracy is being overthrown if Trump doesn't stay president.

Dude has always been relatively apolitical but I would say left-leaning on most issues except guns, because he is a gun enthusiast. Simultaneously, he is a total hippie type with anti-authoritarian and conspiratorial tendencies that I think were ripe to grow into what they have now.

I haven't posted on social media in years, so the slow transformation completely passed me by. He talked to me on messenger out of the blue a couple weeks ago saying we should catch up, and I randomly clicked on his profile to which I was greeted by a bunch of anti-vaxxer bullshit, calling the vaccines "lethal injections" and utter nonsense like that. Hard recoil on my part, especially as someone whose first job post-college was as a science writer at ORNL, the largest scientific national lab in the U.S.

Since then, I've sort of slowly monitored his FB posts out of curiosity, worried about what insanity he's been ingesting from conspiratorial and far right websites. Sure enough, he posted an OAN video, and today he seemed to be framing this entire shitshow as a heroic act on behalf of the Trump supporters, though to be totally fair, he never explicitly says this, so I don't quite know how deep down the rabbit hole he is.

We give a lot of shit to Corrik and Ulti here, but they're at least in reality when it comes to the events that are transpiring right now. And considering that poll that shows about half of Republicans are in support of what happened today, Board 8 is lucky for that.

Never gave a shit about politics interfering with friendships, but cults are another story. I don't know. Honestly have no idea if I'll even say anything about it next time I talk to or hang out with him.

I likely won't. If he brings stuff up though, I will obviously push the fuck back and open that can of worms. Ultimately, I just feel bad for him and am worried what the future might look for him if he continues down the path of radicalization.

I've also gradually basically stopped using social media over the past few years. I'm thinking more and more that social media is responsible for a lot of our problems, and the reason is that social media places people into echo chambers by sorting people with others who think similarly. And it's a feedback loop that gets worse and worse and worse.

I've said for years that Ulti and Corrik are the most swingy voters on this board, and I think that's absolutely true.

I deleted my facebook around new years 2017 and was totally detached from social media for at least 2 years. It was an overwhelmingly positive experience

At some point last year I made a new facebook because I was sick of being locked out of so many sites and whatnot that are dependent on it. I just set all the privacy settings to max, basically never posted, and didn't proactively friend request anyone. I just decided I'd accept any friend request I received with the only criterion being I had to recognize the name/face immediately. Eventually I did start commenting on posts and I've posted maybe 2 statuses. It's nice to be back and check what (a fraction of) people are saying.

That said. Since coming back (2020 basically), such a high percentage of posts I see are like this:

Very seldom do I see anyone they are supposedly berating show up or react. But without fail these posts get so much praise. I'm like what the heck is going on here. You are competing to be the best one-sided arguer among people who agree with you? And most of the time the post in some way suggests they're so tired of reading the alleged bullshit from the other side. But where is it?? What on earth is going on.

Ahh someone told me to go kill myself on facebook because I said crime is crime and you can't condone it as acceptable, especially if you condemned antifa/BLM riots. Lol. Being in the middle politically is rough.

They have identified so many people involved so far.

Since this is all over the internet, I feel like this is fair game.

The one person they most keep pointing to as being antifa is the guy in the fur viking suit. Washington times even said a face analysis firm identified him as a BLM protester and Antifa and pointed to his "Stalinist" tattoo as proof.

However, he is Jake Angeli and his tattoo is a Dishonored tattoo not the Russian sickle and hammer. He is a QAnon believer with strong ties to many white supremacists and a Trump supporter. He has interviews on the internet as well.

I figured this much when I saw the person behind the police motioning for them to swarm forward, but this video shows it better. The police were overrun and flanked all around. They couldn't maintain their position anymore it looks like.

You can actually see one officer at the bottom unwilling to engage with the crowd, even as the officer next to him is getting beaten up. He then motions that he has no intention to do anything to them and for them to move on. He was unwilling to attempt to hold the line.

This was definitely not how they treated prior protests in the area.

But watching back a lot of the video, the police had ample opportunity to disperse the crowd, set up more defensible lines, and prevent gathering(They allowed gathering on some of the side entrances that they had held).

They were just unwilling.
