100% of remotely honest and informed people believe that it is the ethically correct thing to do. Now that democrats have a simple majority, that's technically enough. They should make it a point to do so, so that close to a million people can gain their proper representation

The District of Columbia is just over 68 square miles. By comparison, Rhode Island, the smallest state in the country, is approximately 1,212 square miles. Makes no sense for a piece of land that small to become it's own state.

Population size alone doesn't dictate what becomes a state. Hell let's just make LA, Houston, and Chicago their own states then right? That sounds ridiculous because it is.

I'm all for it. Lack of land mass is the dumbest thing I've seen since that idiot Trumper saying Washington state is a red state because more of the land mass voted red regardless of the general population voting blue. Land is red so it shouldn't matter that more people voted blue.

If you want those people to have the same representation as all the other states then simply cede the land thats not part of the federal enclave back to Maryland. You don't need to create some micro-state that has the same voting power in the Senate as all the other 50 (much, much larger) states.

Youve presented no valid reason to deny statehood to DC other than land size. What is so important about land size? Where is that dictated in the constitution?

Our Founding Fathers intentionally wanted Washington, D.C. to be a district, NOT a state. In fact, they carefully crafted the Constitution so the seat of our federal government would not be located in (and therefore possibly partial to) any one state. That was smart.

The founding fathers desires are not the foundation of the government, unless theyre written in the constitution.

DC residents have overwhelmingly voted for statehood when it has been brought forth. All land in DC that doesnt house a federal building can be a part of the new state. Its not difficult to understand.

Again the constitution was designed so that the capitol of our country was a DISTRICT not a STATE. It's not about the buildings, it's about that entire area. Creating a new state is the exact opposite of what they wanted when they created the constitution.

I only brought up Maryland because I was trying to compromise with the people who were complaining about representation.

I don't think DOC should have 2 Senate seats no matter what color they are. It's 68 miles and I've already established why the Constitution was written so the capitol would not be a state as to not show bias.

It sounds like you want to trash the constitution and the fundamentals of how this country was created just because you want your party of choice to have a little more power. That's very biased thinking.

So let's return to the actual principle of the argument: what actual issues would arise from making DC a state? On what principle should they not be represented in Congress? Specifically. Why does it being small mean it should not be a state? What's the minimum land area that should be required and why? In what significant ways would DC be disproportionately favored by its citizens receiving representation in Congress? And why are they good enough reasons to deny to continue to deny representation of DC's citizens? How would the United States as an institution be degraded in any way?

I am genuinely interested in your response to these questions so please @ me when you respond.

It's cool man I was writing an answer to your post anyways.

Specifically I want an amendment because the Justice Department under both Democratic and Republican administrations has consistently agreed that statehood for the District requires a constitutional amendment. It cannot be done by mere majority vote in Congress.

As for everything else like size, I think it's just a slippery slope for 2 reasons.
1.) The place where all federal decisions are made should be independent of any state policies. I don't trust either party very much and I can see them looking for loopholes to cause as much fuckery as possible.

2.) If we let a 68 mile sized area easily become a state I can forsee some places where radicals from either side could want to succeed from their state and be granted their own statehood for whatever crazy reason they see fit. Again it goes back to pure fuckery because people are too insane to be trusted.

I just think issues like this are extremely complicated and should be handled delicately and properly. Saying "Let's just create a new state!" like it's some easy peasy process sounds crazy/scary to me. Maybe that's not what other posters meant, but that's just how it came across to me.
