He was breathing heavily last night, threw up, walked wobbly and just suddenly collapsed. The vet found mass in his enlarged spleen, which is bleeding, thus the low blood pressure. Before they can do anything, they have to do an ultra sound on his entire body.

I'm really scared I'll lose him. Tanner's always calmed be down before, but if he dies, what am I going to do? My other dogs aren't as playful or calming as Tanner.

I think that if worse comes to worse, a spleen can be removed.

Is Tanner one of those dogs who ignores pain?

He's pretty old, I've been told that surgery is risky at 17.5 years old.

Not to be pessimistic, but at that age I would start steeling yourself for the worst, and start seriously considering whether surgery is actually good for your dog or whether you'll just be putting him into a state of pain and suffering.

My condolences, though. Losing a dog, especially one that's been around 17+ years, is never easy.

Easy for me to say as a faceless poster who has never met you but over time I think you will be able to look back and realize that you gave him a long and healthy life

Start preparing. Obviously do Tanner's favorite things, but I would see if you can find a vet that can do at home euthanasia. That way Tanner will be as comfortable as possible surrounded by the people and things he loves vs a vet office.

Sorry you're going through this, it will stop hurting but I wont bullshit you and tell you you'll get over it. When you love an animal that shit stays. Just remember you gave him a wonderful life and when you make the decision it was the right thing to do, please dont drag out his suffering if he's in pain because it's hard for you (I get it). He'll let you know when it's time. We out our old black lab down last year and it still gets me but I know we did he right thing.

And fuck you for making me cry while writing this lol

I'm sorry to hear that, it's heartbreaking to lose a pet but 17 is a great age, he has had a long life

Spend as much time with him as you can and make his last days as comfortable as possible, it does help a little having time to say goodbye, but it will hurt when he passes because he is your buddy and family and obviously you're going to miss him lots, you will get through it though, I've been there myself and plenty of others here have as well so we can relate and sympathise with you

TC I want to wish you a beautiful life. I'm not going to tell you what I think you should do but I've seen some great advice in this topic.

But I want to give you just pure love from my heart to yours and whoever you are, I wish you the best from this moment forward. I hope your dreams come true, your family stays safe, and remember that every time a beautiful angel like your dog passes away there's always a new baby boi or girl born and ready to be loved.

Even if you decide not to get a dog again, or for a long time, know that other baby bois and girls are being played with right now by kids and many others and they're getting the love they deserve.

The world will keep loving

Sorry, bro. This sounds all too similar to what happened last year with the best pet I ever had.

Found a huge tumor that, even if they could have removed it, would take so much out of her that her quality of life would have been trash.

So we let her ride it out. When she started telling us she was hurting, we had a vet cone to the house to put her down. After the last appointment I promised her I would never make her get in the car again.

I did everything I could to baby her in those last few weeks. Her favorite foods, extra brush sessions, and just a lot of laying around together.

It's been almost one full year now and it still hurts like fuck. Its not going to ever feel good. But you have to remind yourself of the times that it did feel good.

Good luck, man. You'll be okay. It's going to really hurt for a while. Once you get back to normal, you'll get random days where it stings really bad. But you'll still be okay.

Also, give yourself as much time as you need, but don't let this keep you from loving another pet.

My other 2 dogs don't get along with other animals. Plus I could never replace Tanner. It just doesn't feel right.

Getting another pet IS NOT REPLACING. I can't stress this enough.

Absolutely agree with this, there is nothing better you can do but make someone else incredibly the same way you have been doing

It makes sure everyone belongs to a good home because of the love you have for the things and people you care about

Regardless I still can't get a new dog; my other 2 have issues with outside animals and it would not end well.

Making dogs want to cuddle? Try different materials. Some dogs like fleece, some velvet, some fur. Some like cushions. Some do not.

How the air circulates may be another factor. Some dogs instinctively want to be up wind.
