While I haven't been offered it yet, it's looking like I'll get a pretty good job offer for a big tech company (won't say who, but on the same tier as say, Apple).

I live near Pittsburgh and have a pretty good job. Family is close, pays well, friends are nice and job is pretty comfy. But this job would set my career for life. I could do and go anywhere after it, but it's in San Francisco. Higher cost of living, super long hours (12+ vs my 8-9 now) and not knowing anyone.

Anyone been in a situation like this? Not sure which to choose if I were to get the job. The new job would pay more, even taking into account the higher cost of living, but not sure the hours and life change are worth it.

Thoughts?

Working 12 hours wpuld never be worth it no matter what the pay was. You don't have a life outside of work at that point.

You could check and see if they offer remote working. Its become far more popular post covid and a company as big as you're implying it is would likely offer it.

How old are you? If you're young and don't have any other commitments could be worth it to try out for a couple of years, see if you like it and can make it work. If not, you now have two years at prestigious company on your resume and will be able to command a higher salary at another place.

Honestly you have to see if the salary increase is worth it because the COL is going to be dramatically higher in San Francisco than it is in Pittsburgh.

money aside Id do the move if I was early or mid 20s, if you are tied down with a wife/kid/etc thats a different story but this sounds like a fun experience

Good point on the remote working. If something like that is negotiated, I think that would definitely make the longer days better. I would definitely have to be near the actual plant itself as it's a manufacturing type job.

See this is totally true, but in my mind I only work here for like 2-3 years, then go somewhere else but have all these credentials and more money.

Idk I'm super torn

I'd stay in pittsburgh personally.

I've gotten job offers in DC, but never anything that seemed worth it when factoring in the added stress and hours.

But I did intern in dc prior to know I didn't like it.

I'm also pretty much a homebody

26 and yeah this is exactly what the plan was in my head but then it's like well, I could just stay at my current company and probably be happier but make less money haha.

edit: just saw your shift is 12 hrs, fuck that
Haha yeah the 12 hours is the killer part. The interviewers basically said I won't have a life, but the money and clout are what I'm looking for i suppose. Just have to figure out where to draw the line between happiness and money.
Appreciate the feedback though everyone.

Which FAANG will make you work 12 hr shifts? Amazon??

I would say read all about the company on Blind. I had a similar dilemma w/ Microsoft interview recently but in my case I'm not interview ready and my lease is still up for 6 months

Only if you know it would 100% truly set you for life cause higher cost of living and longer hours is a fucking no

Haha I guess it doesn't matter if I say it, but it's Tesla.

(On my phone so I can't quote post 11) but it's basically a continuous improvement engineer job. Between the money, stock options (as they provide a lot) and industry clout, I feel as if the job could set me for life...and maybe I'm wrong, and it won't set me for life and I'm being too ambitious. I'd appreciate any feedback.

ahhh I see. Yeah I've heard they really expect you to devote your life at Tesla. I would say, probably worth it for the prestige. Was going to say, if it was Amazon, meh (assuming you're in software)

Im in a field where there are prestige companies people desire to work for and working for one can set you up in life even as a short stint

also remember that prestige company would also happy to hire you back later in life

so Id say just go for it

If you think you can handle 12 hour days for at least a couple years I'd do it. Tesla should open a lot of doors for you in the future if you don't want to stay there.
