The mother was a woman named Tracy. I don't think you see her for most of the show.

The finale pissed everyone off.

they're in each other's lives throughout the series. he even refers them to as "Uncle Marshall", "Aunt Lily", "Uncle Barney", and "Aunt Robin" when talking about them to his kids.

and the last season of the show, it showed the mom, but she ends up dying, and the kids figure out the reason why Ted tells this long, drawn out story is a roundabout way of getting their permission for him to start pursuing Robin again.

People got omega pissed for no reason at what was a pretty half-decent ending.

The Mother dies, Ted takes the blue French horn back to Robin after gaining his kids approval because as they note, the entire story was him talking about her with a small footnote about their actual mother, and the series ends with a shot to let the viewer decide whether it works between them or not.

People were mad because Mom was an awesome character in her own right and got maybe 2 episodes worth of build. It almost seems like they realized they made her the best character and didn't want Robin to look that much worse in comparison.

I stopped watching the show around season 6 or 7 for whatever reason but I was happy with the way they ended it when I found out.

Main problems with the show:

1. Why is EVERYONE fixated on Robin? She has a decent job but beyond that she is a really terrible girlfriend and like most people in the show is problematic in a lot of ways.
2. Why after Robin breaks up with the psychologist does Ted immediately tell her he loves her? She still doesn't want kids, and Ted desperately wants kids. It makes NO sense that Ted would go after her at this point. They never really reconcile this throughout the rest of the series. You COULD argue that Ted is just fixated on the wrong girl, but they never have HIM come to that realization.
3. Barney is a predator, plain and simple.
4. Quinn. The kind of growth Barney's character goes through with Nora is immediately removed and then they kinda try to do it again with Quinn. It would have made more sense for Barney to be with Nora for like... half or a full season and have the same growth. Feels like they didn't wanna pay her potentially.
5. They do mention it from time to time, but Lily is often a borderline psycho. She deliberately plays with everyone's emotions and manipulates them. Yeah she is called out on it from time to time, but the show does not really come to terms with the fact that she is just as selfish as someone like Barney but in a potentially even more devious way.
6. Lily gives Marshall shit for wanting to stay with GNB, regardless of the fact that it was his finances that was largely responsible for allowing her to eventually leave teaching and go for the arts. The whole time all Marshall wants to do is provide for her and their family, and yet she still gives him shit for it. Potentially it is Lily's art that helps pay off her credit cards, but Marshall was the reason they could afford to do what eventually they did.
7. Ted and Victoria were great together. The only reason it failed was they randomly made Victoria want Ted to leave being friends with Robin. While I won't disagree that she mentioned how "that doesn't work", in terms of them all being friends, it is a total 180 of Victoria's character and they did it only to get Victoria out of the way.
8. Ted would NEVER have stayed with someone like Jeanette for anything more than a weekend.
9. Barney should have ended up with Nora. Full stop. That was the complete arc for his character. He found someone who made him want to be better and commit to a relationship. While you can argue the series did a decent job of showing that Barney and Robin were passionate but not compatible, Barney's shoehorned "happy ending" could have been something long term and serious with Nora. Hell, arguably, assuming they maybe had a kid together, they could have been an excellent relationship akin to Ted and Tracy.

thay said yeah Milioti was absolutely the best part of the cast, Im glad shes been in more things lately, loved her in Palm Springs. Was funny to see her turn up in a small role in Sopranos when I watched that recently

It seemed like they made the ending before the rest of the show and then shortly before the end realised they weren't close so threw away lots of development to get to it rather than running with what they had.

Basically they GoT'd their ending before GoT did it.

The mom was too awesome to end up with a POS like Ted. Ted was awful.

It's kind of awful to basically tell the kids "Hey, I'm sorry your mom died but it's okay because I always wished I ended up with Robin instead, so now I get to be happy"

People don't take bittersweet endings very well so the mother dying upset a lot of people.

Ted being over Robin and then not happening over and over again was not enjoyable and they kind of made it the whole point of the show by the end.

Barney and Robin getting married being such a huge thing and then it not particularly mattering much in the grand scheme of things was weird.

Overall, people overreacted to it. It's not a fun ending but for me it's just kind of there. It's just not what most people wanted.
