The Squall Rinoa romance is so forced it's dumb.

All game Squall doesn't give a shit about Rinoa. She kind of teases him and some characters try to push them together, but he consistently doesn't give a shit.

Then when she leaves the party to be imprisoned, Squall suddenly is all HOLY SHIT I FUCKING LOVE HER I MUST GET HER BACK. So he goes through the trouble of chasing her to outer space, finally gets her back, has some quality alone time with her, and he's just slightly less giving a shit. Then the big love song plays and he's still acting like he doesn't give a shit.

Last time I played the game I paid close attention to all the dialogue, and the romance just comes out of nowhere.

Little torn on this one but I think I'll have to go with Zidane/Garnet.

I disagree. Squalls entire character is him cowering before his own emotions due to the Matron leaving when he was a child. He had feelings for Rinoa since the first time he danced with her, but never expressed them until later in the game. Regardless of him expressing his feelings, Rinoa became a friend and part of their team. At the time she needed to be rescued during Disc 1, Squall went to save a friend, not a lover. Granted it was Irvine who peer'd Squall into doing it. But I really think if Squall didn't care, he wouldn't have even tried to save Rinoa. Not only that, Squall console'd Irvine after the missed shot attempt.

He does care, and he did have feelings for Rinoa, slowly but surely...but he does NOT like showing his emotions, for fear that the people he really cares for would do the same thing Matron did...which is leave. This is something Quistis was desperately trying to break Squall out of.

I dunno, I feel that's really reading between the lines. FF8 is unironically my second favorite FF, behind 7, and I've played through it a good number of times. The romance always felt forced.

ehh fair enough. I get it though. Squall was just a locked box of emotions Robot through about 95% of the game.

It's kind of playing out the entire game. Zidane being overly flirty and Dagger always being the (playfully) "Stop that" kind of girl. Zidane was always there for Dagger though when she really needed it (singing in Lindblum, when she lost her voice, when she lost her summons, when she cut her hair, etc.).

They definitely had a thing for each other. The ending cutscene is what really ties it together though.

Cecil & Rosa get expanded on in TAY. While the love triangle element was always there it felt like a side note in the larger Cecil - Golbez dynamic. It's overlooked a little too much IMO and full of interesting nuances that haven't really been seen in other FF games.

The closest it gets is Laguna / Julia
