Also does it have an important enough story to necessitate playing through all 6 games?

All 6 games seem to have gotten 9-10 review scores, wasnt sure if they were GOOD good or just good for their time.

I've completed the first 3 Splinter Cells, and played a bit of Double Agent. Wasn't too keen on Double Agent, but I loved the first three - and I'm not even a particularly huge fan of the genre.

I haven't played MGS so I dunno how they compare, specifically, but at least the original trilogy of Splinter Cell are good games.

They're pretty different.

Metal Gear Solid is arcadey stealth with boss fights and an over the top story

Splinter Cell is very much a Tom Clancy game (for the first four games at least). The world is grounded as is the story. Each game deals with a new global threat that often barely know who the protagonist even is and the next story moves onto something new. There's only a few minor connections and side characters in one game might have a bigger role in the next but nothing major. So no the story isn't really that important. First four games have a traditional Tom Clancy sort of story, Conviction tries to move it into more of an action series direction and Blacklist is a mix between the two.

It's still a series worth playing but it depends on how hardcore you are about stealth. The first two games are not forgiving and you will need to sneak through the entire game. Prepare to get detected and try again. Chaos Theory and Double Agent opens up a fair bit but is still grounded. Conviction and Blacklist are still pretty accessible.

That's not the case for the first four games. But the stealth is way better.

Better stealth, less interesting story. Metal Gear is a game with stealth and Splinter Cell is a stealth game.

Stealth gameplay-wise, Chaos Theory is basically perfection.

Splinter Cell has good gameplay but everything else is extremely generic and forgettable.

I played all the first 3 games and I cant remember anything about them.

Yeah, Splinter Cell is like a hard-stealth game whereas MGS is more zany and "fun".

Splinter Cell stealth make metal gear solid look a joke, aside from MGSV. It's almost as perfect as stealth can be IMO

^this

I'm a huge fan of both series but MGS is over the top and the stealth is designed more so as a means to an end. You're Solid Snake and you're literally engineered to be one of the greatest soldiers of all time lol you can definitely leave guards on the ground and go hide in a cardboard box with Otacon if you want

Splinter Cell is more like deep infiltration without actually ever making a sound or leaving a trace - it plays slower and really focuses on the whole light and dark balance

Maybe you're right about 'good for it's time' but at the same time the new ones simply don't play like the old ones do.. they play more like MGS but you're not Big Boss: you are mega action Sam Fisher making an appearance in the last episode of 24

Honestly I kind of miss how old Tom Clancy games had this sort of mundane quality to them. Just a bunch of soldiers doing their job and nobody really knows who they are.

Nowadays they're more like superhero stories with over the top charismatic villains and plot twists and heroes who have some sort of personal stake in the mission. It all gets a bit samey.

Chaos Theory has an awesome co-op campaign along with a really unique multiplayer mode. Great game.
