It's overall morale is "Racism is bad" which is nice if simple except for the fact your sidekicks you spend the entire game with are literally a black vodoo preistess, a drunken Irishmann who wears green, wants to fight all the time and talks like a Leprechaun spouting random allegedly Irish words and sayings in every single sentence and an Italian with greasy hair who unironically says "Furgad about it!" while literally cooking Bucatini.

So the tone is completely off, it's going "Gee aren't sterotypes bad, now let's have a laugh at all these dumb sterotypes lul! Look at this guy! He's Cuban! isn't that weird!"

And the main villain has a dastardly master plan of.... Going legit so his family can have a happy life and not hurt anyone.

I mean the mob bosses you take down are assholes but the ones you replace the with are also assholes. I'm not really seeing the motivation the player is supposed to have to drive the story. It's basically 30 hours of replacing interchangable clerks with other interchangable clerks at a 7-11.

I mean they turned on Lincoln Clay sure but he turned on those Haitan dudes like literally 5 seconds before and kills 80,000 times as many people (innocent or otherwise) as the "bad" guy does, so glass houses. Meanwhile he openly says several times that he gets no enjoyment out of killing all these guys and nothing he does will help anyone or undo his pain... Yet continues for literally no reason.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against a story where the protaganist is a bad or stupid person but Clay has no personality whatsoever, no interesting motivation and there are no macinations or valuable relationships or dialogues or dramas of any kind. No one calls him out in any meaningful way, he's never tempted by an alternate path, and the game never sets out to cast Clay in a bad light, the progression, cutscenes, music etc always act like he's a badass taking down villains. It's so poorly thought out. Compare to something like Spec Ops The Line or Silent Hill 2 that works wonders with a bland protaganist who is a bad person through excellent plot/game design and music.

And as an aside. Lincoln Clay? Really? Might as well call him Malcolm King or Barack Nelson or Gregory J. Blackguy.

I haven't played Mafia 1 or 2 but are they all this dumb?

The gameplay is fine.

But sadly I think it's got nothing on GTA5 or Sleeping Dogs.

No real side activities, no interesting characters and the combat is fun but nothing special.

It's a solid "Does the job" passable C grade on general gameplay. There are plenty of much worse sandboxes, It's just been outdone by other games

I actually don't have an issue with the story, because it's at least done competently as opposed to the gameplay which is the most repetitive and boring shit ever. Didn't even bother spending more than a couple hours on the "definitive edition".
