Finished it this morning and had a blast, despite going into it having had the impression that it aged like crap and it's unplayable. It's ugly, certainly, but at the end of the day Arkane still proved to me that they still got chops even back during their first game. For the first time I actually enjoyed running around and exploring underground tunnels, since normally I HATE that kind of setting. The way your character progressed was really satisfying as well, providing you didn't stretch your skill points too thin. I went with a mage thief build and being able to do more and more spells, pick more and more locks, brew more kinds of potions, etc. and it felt so good. Especially the spell system, with how you mix and match runes and draw the symbols on the screen.

Game made me nab Ultima Underworld 1 & 2 (currently bundled on GOG for just over a dollar! :x) and currently installing Dark Messiah. It's my last Arkane game left until Deathloop and I feel kind of sad about it.

It's a fantasy game set underground, since the surface is no longer livable and humans and other fantasy races moved their people down there to survive. You wake up in a goblin-ran prison cell with amnesia, and you escape and set out to figure out what's going on with the races and how you fit into it all. You can build your character up as a warrior, thief, mage, some kind of hybrid, your call. The overall story is average, as I'd call every Arkane game's main story tbh, but the gameplay and world building around it is still the addicting part.

i bought it on a gog sale a long time ago, but don't think i've ever installed it.

i think the 'draw runes for magic' turns me off as i'm stuck with a laptop touchpad and uhh

Excellent game. I also came with the impression of aged clunker, but turned out to be a lot smoother than i expexted and the dungeon design is sublime

Yep, it's the only mod I used. In terms of movement, everything felt pretty good aside from how jumping was. Jumping is...weird lol. I played the opening of Dark Messiah and that already feels better and smoother.
