I'm sure the first one is a classic... How long into the sequels does the series hold up?

I own a copy of the first... Never got around to it

They are long and very complex books, they are much more political then other scifi novels. Some people like only the first book, some hate all the books, and some love a select fee.

Dune is very much a thinking mans scifi and it sometimes gets to complicated or difficult for some to keep track of all the wheeling and dealings.

The first four are excellent.

The rest by his son are pretty meh. And the ultimate ending is sort of lame imo.

Incredibly dense and convoluted. The first book isn't too bad, but the following are a slog from start to finish IMO.

The first one is a classic. After that they get progressvely weirder. The first three are pretty good and tell a cohesive story. After that they get... realy weird.

The first is a classic, read that at least. The second was OK, but felt like a bridge to the third book. Book four is one of my favorite books period, but I can't really give any reasons without spoilers.

I've read 5 and 6, too. They're good but don't even feel like Dune books anymore. There are a couple more the son finished but I haven't gotten around to them.

The first 3 sort of form a trilogy and I highly recommend all of them.

The 4th is one of those books that some people absolutely love and some people don't. My best friend adored it, I thought it was just okay. I never read the last two by Frank Herbert.

General opinion is that the books written by his son & others don't hold up.

Yeah 1-3 are pretty solid and I loved them.

4 is pretty dense for a fiction novel and it took me awhile to get through. 5-6 were more breezy but they are a bit different as other people mentioned.

Altogether the 6 book series is still pretty great and worth reading.
