the rest of the GOP seems intent on keeping direction.

Really expected a heavy and disorienting shift in the GOP once Trump was out.

Almost like people overrate his intelligence and ability and he's ultimately not that skilled a politician

That was never going to happen given how many votes Trump actually got. I think you're going to see the GOP stumble through a more meandering shift as they try and gradually distance themselves from Trump, but slowly enough that his biggest fans don't accuse them of outright betrayal.

It wasn't that long ago that the GOP had to deal with the Tea Party screwing things up for them. I imagine they are particularly sensitive to creating an environment where a new faction can form within their ranks again.

Isnt his position highly coveted? Must take some nefarious skill to stay in it so long.

It's a dead end position. It goes to whoever is least likely to lose their seat.

McConnell's job is to keep the money pouring in to GOP senate campaigns; the stuff around January 6 makes it trickier for big corporate donors to financially back Republicans, which is why McConnell wants to present a clean break. (He also no doubt believes Trump bears some blame for the losses in Georgia).

Senators like Hawley or Cruz or even Rand Paul to some extent, meanwhile, have one eye on running for President, which means staying in the good graces of GOP voters who still largely love Trump. Others have Republican primaries for their own seats to worry about (McConnell isn't up for re-election until 2026).

Lol Sarah sanders is the presumptive favorite gubernatorial candidate here in Arkansas simply because she worked for Trump. It's totally delusional to think the gop is going to ditch him

At this point, certainly. Idk, they went from calling him a clown to revering him as a god within a week during the 2016 primaries. It's pretty clear they glommed onto him because he showed promise of power. But then by 2020 he lost the presidency and congress, so you'd think the behavior would shift back out in the other direction.
