they're so bland and depressing and usually have dumb puzzles that slow down the pacing. it's even worse in older JRPGs with random encounters. replace them with interesting towns or more aesthetically-pleasing outdoor locations and it would be an improvement in pretty much 100% of cases.

tbh is is monumentally difficult to make a JRPG that will hold my interest. 99% of them I can't complete

Yeah outdoor dungeons with the occasional tower or w/e is better.

I could go a lifetime without another cave, sewer, or underground labyrinth.

Sewer dungeons always get my engine revving, it's always either a cool secret passage type dungeon or else some wild shit ends up going down

Dear RPG developers:

This is not fun.

This has never been fun, and will never be fun.
Please stop doing that.

I just want to murder things and make the numbers bigger, not waste an hour pushing blocks around before asking google (or just going straight to google anyway).

As someone with fond memories of JRPGs, I didn't realize until I was much older that I would always have to mentally prepare myself for dungeons.

Random battles had the most to do with them being a slog, though. It's not really the turn-based combat that's aged for me, it's the random battles. It's why things like Grandia, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound hold up better for me today.

Whoa now,

Dungeons are pretty different,

I mean we are talking like FFX Dungeon, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne Dungeons? or the Wild Arms Puzzle Dungeon?

You have to remember that the older style of random encounters was a way to save on graphical power by choosing to not animate every single monster on screen.

Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross
Legend of Mana
Saga Frontier (a rerelease is coming soon)

Man those were the days, graphics were just catching up to illustrate some truly crazy landscapes, and because the monster weren't there you had this weird since of immersion. I mean Parasite Eve at night while you a running through the NYPD station or the Museum is still pretty awesome.

Vagrant Story also does dungeons well (but that kinda its thing

Sorry Nostalgia...

I was actually about to post how much I liked Crosscode's temples(even though it isn't a JRPG), but I would never recommend that game to anyone who would have a problem with puzzles in the slightest. Getting back on topic, I remember liking FFX's Mt. Gagazet if that counts as a dungeon. It also has a cave and underwater section, but I prefer the outside snow area.

Sewers and Forests are way better than most Caves in JRPG's imo.

Crosscode's dungeons are fun because they actually break the monotonous JRPG dungeon mold of just killing a bunch of the same enemies in a cave. They make you think and it's rewarding when you do figure them out.
Somewhere, in the main villain's lair:
"Sir, they're massacring our guys by the dozens! what do we do?"
"Stick a bunch of random crates next to the doors. That'll buy us at least an hour."

Also I noticed a lot of Square RPGs had the obligatory 'maze in the forest'
Or, you know, the "Maze Mansions" of Octopath.

Or, the "maze sewer" of every JRPG ever.
