If you had random jobs, such as waiting tables or cashiering when you were younger - do you add that in a professional resume? When it has nothing to do with the job youre applying to?

Depends. If you have a lot of experience after those two jobs then maybe you can leave it out. But if you can link it to a job you're applying to it can still be experience that can make you stand out.

(example: cashier experience is good if you want to go into banking or accounting)

I don't include my unrelated jobs, no.

I try to paint a picture I've always been a successful professional rather than adding "cashier, summer camp, woodchopper"

Put yourself in your employer's shoes for the job for which you are applying. Does your employment experience make a case as to why you would be good at this job? If yes, put it in there. If no, leave it out.

A resume is a short, persuasive document telling an employer why you are the best candidate for the job. Anything that does not speak to your qualifications of the job is just filler and should be removed.

With that being said, there are many jobs at face value that may not seem to correlate with a job for which you are applying, but can be reworded in a way to make it fit better. Some skills may be transferable, but you have to make it crystal clear to the employer what those skills are.

Best not to add the odd jobs since nobody actually reads through full esumes anymore.

Nope. I actually often change my resume a bit depending on the employer Im sending it to. Ive learned that literally no one double checks it. So, if that means I can cut out a few shorter jobs and extend timelines on others to reduce employment gaps, so be it

Sometimes its best to list everything to avoid having gaps in your work history. If youre applying for a nice job, it still may require you to deal with people. For example, if you were going to work at a bank, then listing food or retail jobs is proof that you have experience with interacting with customers.

Nah.

I'm old. Who the fuck cares if I worked at Walmart for a year and a half and left at 18?

It depends. Once you've had 2-3 professional jobs it is time to consider dropping older jobs from your resume. If you want to include them you can, but at that point you may just want to say the name of the job and the years worked and not list your responsibilities. You don't want your resume to be 4+ pages.

I kept my old summer job for the last resume I had to make, but when I add my current job to it, Ill definitely take it out.

I still have my college job on there though.

You should leave off any job like that as soon as you've had a professional one in your career field, possibly even if it was just an internship. It might not necessarily hurt but it's just a waste of space because 99% of the time they are not going to be impressed by your quantity of jobs or years of unspecific experience.

The only exception I'd say is if your current job is one of those Joe jobs but even then I'd say a gap might still come across better.

This is honestly the correct answer. I have a lot of menial jobs on my resume, but once you start getting into a professional career, they're really only concerned about relevant experience. I had 4 interviews for my current job and none of them asked me what I did at Mervyn's (retail), MCI (telemarketing), Civic Development Group (telemarketing), Dell (material handler), Farmers (data entry), or even my 5.5 years of doing tech support. They were only interested in my experience with networking specifically and what my skillset was.

Also re gaps, IME they almost never care as long as it isn't current. I had a big gap before landing my current job and it would get brought up every time, now when I interview for jobs, the gap is still on my resume but it's rare for them to talk about it. Hell it's rare that they even talk about my prior job.

Just trying to pick peoples brains.

Im about to graduate with my masters in public health and I need to edit my resume. I dont have any relevant job experience in this field, but I have 4 years of shift supervisor experience when I was 18-22 at a Rite Aid. It has nothing to do with my degree, so I wasnt sure if I should include it or not.

Having work experience isn't as crucial if you're in school, I'd say you could put it if there's no other experience to list, but doesn't really need more than a line or two.

Do you have enough in your education, internships, volunteer programs, certification, skills, hobbies, etc. to make your resume stand out?
