Like in video game, or watching a sports game, or before a sports game

It's another thing that seems universal as fuck that I just can't get behind. I don't like doing it, I don't like it done to me, I don't like that it exists. No one would know I have a problem with it since I always roll with it, but still. People just come up with mean gross things to say like how's that fun at all

Even if I'm tiers above my opponent in terms of skill it doesn't occur to me to talk trash. Why do people do and get enjoyment out of that?

I never got it either, i've always been humbled. I play a ton of board games with the wife, we have like 50, and it's never competitive, we just like to play. I'm a sports fan also and was never that guy.

That's dope man I didn't expect many people here to be/feel the same. It's one of the many things that's kept me from feeling like "one of the guys" so to speak

I feel the same way, but I got dogpiled for saying teabagging was disgusting here a while back. Toxic people are generally very defensive about it.

My buddies and I trash talk all the time but we always do it to make each other laugh, never to be genuinely insulting or antagonistic. Those people should have no friends, and probably dont.

Probably a couple reasons.

1. Attempt to get in the person's head and possibly give you a competitive advantage
2. Controlled hostility with someone you trust can be fun at times. Just like rough sex, the girl knows you're not gonna kill her. It just makes it more exciting.

I only remember this from the arcade game, and it was scary as fuck. Rail shooter. Great game, eater of quarters

Just homies joking with each other is fun. Especially if you all know it's in jest. You can tell the difference.

That said, people who do it with strangers are weird. Hell, people that voice chat in games with strangers are weird. Shit talking in that environment is weird. It's like going to a stranger's house and kicking your feet up on their kitchen table.

it never quite got that way in local play, or only very rarely, like during my streak in nfl street.

I think it's fine, the problem is that alot of people these days seem to not know what trash talk is and instead use it as an excuse to just be full on toxic or racist or misogynistic etc. (at least when it comes to the internet/online games) and just say "bro it's just trash talk if you can't handle it get off the internet/get thicker skin!"

It reminds me of a phrase I heard a while back.

Guys insult eachother, but don't mean it. Girls complement eachother, but don't mean it.

Trash talk in competitive matches is just a part of how guys socialize with eachother. It doesn't really mean anything.

Trash talking is designed to up the stakes (and thereby increase excitement) by putting your dignity on the line and giving incentive to others to shut you up.

Trash talker defends their rights to talk shit, challenger works to shut them up.

When the insults have no legitimate connection to a competitive event, it isn't trash talking anymore, it is just insulting and/or being a douche.

i would say that's something i categorically don't do, though. at worst i'm like wow you thought that would work. i'm not typing up angry tirades wishing violence on anyone. i am usually the recipient of those.

are you sure, or are there things you won't do because of some honor code idea? is there maybe a meta you dislike?

i would say that the people actually worth trash talking aren't going to be too wounded by mean words. you shouldn't be trying to hurt their feelings either way -- go after their game ideology. take pieces away from their idea of how the game should be played. they lost because they were wrong.
