tbqh if I get someone behind me while driving and they're really bad regarding tailgating / driving too close, I'll just pull to the side and slow down so they can pass (when it's safe to do so of course). Not all the time, but definitely for drivers who are especially reckless.

An important factor to consider is that even if you get rear-ended and it's totally their fault, you have to deal with driving around a beaten car for awhile, or worse. Plus dealing with insurance and bringing your car to a repair shop. Even if you have precautions like dash cams (which are great to have) it's still a hassle. Why not just pull to the side when it's safe to do so and not even risk anything, is how I figure it.

You shouldn't be tailgating anybody under any circumstance, ever. It doesn't matter if they were under the speed limit. You are just making things more dangerous for everybody involved for no reason. You were getting checked because you were tailgating. If you are on top of them when they brake, you are tailgating.

You were at fault here. Their own speed is completely irrelevant. Sorry.

This, you were too close dude. Even if they were to suddenly slow down and drive below the limit, you should have been at the distance where you could've comfortably adjusted your speed to maintain that distance.

They first braked when it went from 55 to 45 and I was far enough away to start slowing down to 45 easily, but they stayed at 35-40. Continued to brake check while I was roughly 1/2-1 car length away at various points.

I dont tailgate unless theyre going under the speed limit. I was literally driving with my foot over the brake. Even my buddy in the car thought they were being dicks.

the point of brake checking is to get the person to realize theyre too dangerously close and back off. it's not supposed to be used as a means of road justice. but it is absolutely acceptable to brake check if someone is right on you

the first thing they teach in drivers ed (and i dont think im being hyperbolic here) is defensive driving and staying 2-3 car lengths behind the car in front of you. there just is no excuse for being close enough to the driver in front of you that them suddenly braking causes you to freak out other than blindly following the masses. you see how close everyone else drives and you do the same then take no personal responsibility when drivers don't put up with that nonsense. i say that as someone whos been there when i was a younger guy

i've been brake checked before when i was younger - i was too close to the car and realized i was too aggressive of a driver (and a bad one at that) and had to change my driving. i didnt cry about the guy brakechecking lmao i waved sorry and backed off and corrected my future habits.

Part of being a good driver is mostly being a good defensive one. The thing that stood out to me most at driving school was "3 second distance", not this whole car length BS because that doesn't factor in the general speed of traffic.

Follow the 3 second rule, gives you enough time to react if car in front of you slams brakes due to something unforeseen in their path. If the dude is driving ridiculously below the speed limit, just change lanes and AVOID the bad drivers, don't provoke. Not worth it.

otherway around, Im referring to people merging left and slowing down. At least here its daily you see someone on a four lane highway merge into the far left or second to left going slow as fuck because the car in front of them is a couple lengths away.

even if they dont actually speed up to pass that car and instead just spread out a blockade of whatever that speed is.

if you merge right its a completely different situation.

Its not bullshit though. Its legit fact. Driving slower than the flow of traffic is just as dangerous as driving faster than the flow of traffic.

If you're depth perception is that bad how do you even know if you were tailgating or not?

A single car length or two at highway speeds isn't proper distance. You should be able to pick a landmark on the roadside and it should be a minimum 2 seconds distance from the car ahead passing it till you pass it.

I always thought that was taught basically everywhere.

Got to the behind them stage at around the 45 part. They went 35-40 (outside of them braking) throughout the 45 area and went about 30 in the 35, but around that time is when it split to 2 lanes and I refused to pass them, as their passenger rolled down their window and was sticking his head out.

It wasnt the highway. It was a 2-lane road with perfect conditions. Still residential area.

And lets say I was tailgating. Ill humor CE. Even if I was, brake checking is incredibly dangerous and shouldnt be handwaved away with hur dur you were tailgating. Two wrongs dont make a right. Whenever someone tailgates me, I dont do dumb shit like that. But apparently CE is all about that.
