You have to think about the baseline level of quality that even economy cars have these days.

Look back to lets say an entry level civic in the 90's. Cheap plastics and cloth used in the cabin, low rent gauges/levers/sound systems/roll up windows/cheap feeling handles, knobs,buttons/sparse safety features/ect..

Yeah that made the cars cheap, but if you compare one side by side with a modern car of the same make/model, the new ones are infinitely more luxurious and a much more pleasant place to be. This comes at a cost. Technology gets cheaper for stuff like radios/speakers/ect.. but stuff like seats, materials that are used in the dash/door cards/ect... are fairly consistent over the years, so the nicer you need to make them to keep up with the ever raising baseline of quality, the cost goes up.

I mean, I personally drive old manual jeeps, so I agree, however we are not representative of the the average person on the market. The average consumer is demanding a certain level of quality these days that did not exist in the past, and the gov't is demanding a certain level of engineering go into each car to comply with various safety standards, as a result the prices have gone up.

EV will NEVER be mainstream in Canada because 6 months of the year their battery efficiency drops to 40-60% (on a good battery, let alone an older one). 120v literally will not even charge batteries in the weather i have outside right now. You need 220v.

Rich mans car but papa elon cant even fathom what its like to earn a middle class wage without a 10 figure bank of M+D behind him.

Never buy new and bite at cars that have been on the market for 90+ days, also bait and switch with pre-approved financing or cash.

Also deny all protections and add-ons

I want a good 'affordable' EV, ~22-30k. Tesla is a little too expensive still for my liking, ~40k-60k, and read that they have serious service issues if you have problems or an accident.

The used market seems more expensive this past year as well. I'll just hold on to my old reliable 2007 Camry for a little longer.

An 07 camry still has a lot of life in it. You can get those things up 250k+ miles easy. No sense in wasting money. The money you'll save from gas will in no way offset the cost for spending $30k on a new vehicle + electric costs.

I did that. While it is nice to drive, I am looking at a major expense: tires and new ignition coils. At least I didn't pay too much for the car itself.

Yep,I've had my used '01 Camry XLE paid off for over 12 years. It has 187k miles atm and it still runs great.I do need a seat cover since it's all leather. Besides changing the oil/brakes myself,it has been super cheap and effortless.

Also my insurance is only $23 per month. In the next 5 years I will be eyeing a used Camry or similar to start the cycle over.Only paid like $6500 for it in '08.

Luxury has actually gone down in a way. While the top of the line models for each brand are more ridiculous than ever, it's a lot easier for the every man to get into an entry level luxury car at this point. Even my Mom is heavily considering a Q3, and she's a notorious cheapskate by her own admission.

agreed. Until theres an EV with a range of 300+ miles, costs around the same as a Corolla (and similar size), theyre never going to replace ICE cars.

I just saw today that Toyota announced 2 new EVs for next year and wants 70% of their cars to be EVs by 2030. I'm guessing the ones coming out next year will probably still be over 35k though but might qualify for the federal tax credit of $7,500. Hopefully the increasing competition and decreasing battery cost we'll see a good EV under 25K in a few years. I think Elon Musk said Tesla is also hoping for a new model to cost around 25k in 3 years or so.

coal is less than a quarter of the us energy grid, and the mpge of EVs is about 100.

https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=427&t=3

but gasoline produces CO2 at the same rate by mass as coal, despite combustion engines being only a third as efficient as electric motors in converting chemical to kinetic energy.
