I don't even know what the eff to write about. Obviously there's some controversy about whether or not it's even necessary at this point in time.

Write about how it implies that the US is "occupying" or "claiming" space and the moral implications of it or something. Whether or not the additional security the US may gain from this is worth that, or if any country has the right to have a military force in space.

Yeah just bring it down to environmental reasons and go about the impact of such space ventures and the ways it has either brought the scientific community together or how it brings a conscious effort to do as all humans do and wonder about life beyond what we can see now

Maybe imply negatives here and there to show em youre objective and what not

That is an interesting aspect, but it's difficult because a lot of countries are doing this, too. So I guess I need to pull more information about them, too -_-

I wonder how people wrote essays like 30 years ago when they had to go to the library and actually look up physical references and read them and shit, that must have been a major pain in the ass. I've been procrastinating on this all week and it's not even that hard (you can even use first and second person pronouns in the essay so it's not like a super serious thing), I just have hardcore writer's block/motivation/self-esteem issues -_-

If I say "This guy wrote this. Then he said that." do I need to put a citation in parenthesis or is it enough to... just say he said it and include the reference in the bibliography

Introduce the source at the beginning of the paragraph, and then when citing specific pages do this (Harpie 24).



This example is a block quote. If not doing a block quote, then just integrate the source intro into the beginning of the paragraph like a normal sentence

3 pages in... Time for a smoke break.

Actually not that bad. Also I think the minimum for tonight is 5 pages but I might as well flesh it out as best as possible and then try to just ... reword and move things around for the final draft when it's due.

Also noticing I included less of my analysis of the source material than the sample essays did so I'm curious what the prof says about that.

That's how I would have went after it but more "question if" and maybe not "implies". I thought we had treaties about this stuff? Granted it doesn't mean the US is sending a ship load of soldiers out in space or anything but it's possibly the start.

There's actually very, very, very little in the way of international agreements about space stuff. There's an Outer Space Treaty from 1967 that bans putting nuclear weapons in space and trying to claim ownership of space and doing certain things on the Moon, but that's literally it.

Nothing preventing militarized action in space. There's a UN committee for defining and governing peaceful uses of space but the problem is those are also pretty general.

And there's a lot of weird shit countries are putting up there that don't even fall under any sort of definable category of weapon, like these Russian "stalker satellites" that sound like something out of Outlaw Star, they supposedly have grabber arms and could knock a satellite out of orbit or at least damage it to ruin its operability.

And there's a lot of ambiguity about what the appropriate level of force is when retaliating against a satellite strike, since they can have really disproportionate effects but then if someone knocks out a few single satellites and degrades your GPS capability is it fair to launch a full invasion of them?

It's not even clear what the appropriate response is to like purely accidental shit like a satellite winds up falling out of orbit and damages another satellite in the process. Based on the few articles and interviews I read it sounds like organizations are taking steps to mitigate that and facilitate communications but it's still kind of weird to think about - we haven't had anything like that up until this point and we've been putting stuff up in space for decades.

I didn't read ahead, we were tasked on week one with finding an "artifact" (video, message or picture) and do an analysis about what the intended message and audience are, how they relay that message, etc. And then... craft an informative or argumentative factual essay around it >_>. It's that final part I wasn't anticipating lol.

Yeah but people countries have been aggressively deploying space forces since before the US did by some metrics.

I would argue that based purely on metrics the US did significantly more to deploy a space force than they did with the actual Space Force.

Trumps version only involved some new uniforms. Prior to that the Air Force dabbled in space quite frequently.

Maybe? I mean Russia and China have put a lot of effort into developing anti-satellite missiles, too.

The Air Force did a lot but these countries, well at least Russia has been doing things for a long time, too.
